Near-infrared-featured broadband CO2 reduction with water to hydrocarbons by surface plasmon

Canyu Hu et al.

Summary: Imitating natural photosynthesis to synthesize hydrocarbon fuels is a viable strategy for solar-to-chemical energy conversion. Utilizing low-energy photons, especially near-infrared photons, has been a challenging aim to improve conversion efficiency. In this study, we report a broadband plasmon-induced CO2 reduction reaction with water, achieving a CH4 production rate of 0.55 mmol g(-1) h(-1) with 100% selectivity to hydrocarbon products under full-spectrum light illumination. The enhanced local electric field plays a crucial role in efficient multiphoton absorption and selective energy transfer, paving the way for low-energy photon utilization.

Regulating Spin Polarization through Cationic Vacancy Defects in Bi4Ti3O12 for Enhanced Molecular Oxygen Activation

Dongpeng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study successfully activated molecular oxygen (O-2) for water purification by using cationic defect-rich Bi4Ti3O12 (BTO-MV2) catalysts. The V-Ti on BTO nanosheets induced electron spin polarization, increasing the number of spin-down photogenerated electrons and reducing electron-hole pair recombination. The active surface V-Ti served as a center for adsorbing O2 and extracting electrons, effectively generating (OH)-O-circle, O-2 (circle-), and O-1(2). The degradation rate constant of tetracycline achieved by BTO-MV2 was 3.3 times faster than BTO, indicating promising practical applications.

Peptide-mediated Aqueous Synthesis of NIR-II Emitting Ag2S Quantum Dots for Rapid Photocatalytic Bacteria Disinfection

Peiqing Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, a biomimetic silver binding peptide AgBP2 was used to develop a simple synthesis method for biocompatible Ag2S quantum dots (QDs). The AgBP2 capped Ag2S QDs showed excellent fluorescence emission in the NIR-II window and exhibited physical and photostability in water. Under 808 nm NIR laser irradiation, AgBP2-Ag2S QDs acted as a photothermal agent for NIR photothermal conversion and a photocatalyst for generating reactive oxygen species (ROS). The obtained AgBP2-Ag2S QDs achieved a highly effective disinfection efficacy of 99.06% against Escherichia coli within 25 min of NIR irradiation, attributed to the synergistic effects of photogenerated ROS and hyperthermia. This work demonstrates a promising strategy for efficient bacterial disinfection.

Identification of the Active Sites on Metallic MoO2-x Nano-Sea-Urchin for Atmospheric CO2 Photoreduction Under UV, Visible, and Near-Infrared Light Illumination

Xi Wu et al.

Summary: We report an oxygen vacancy (V-o)-rich metallic MoO2-x nano-sea-urchin with partially occupied band, which exhibits super CO2 photoreduction performance under UV, visible and NIR light. The V-o-rich MoO2-x nano-sea-urchin shows significantly higher CH4 evolution rate compared to the V-o-poor MoO2-x, and can even reduce CO2 directly from the air. Experimental and theoretical results suggest that the oxygen vacancy in MoO2-x facilitates CO2 adsorption/activation and subsequent protonation of *CO towards the formation of CH4 due to the formation of a highly stable Mo-C-O-Mo intermediate.

Photochemical Acceleration of Ammonia Production by Pt1-Ptn-TiN Reduction and N2 Activation

Chengliang Mao et al.

Summary: Stable metal nitrides (MN) hold promise for future green ammonia-hydrogen nexus. A challenging step in this process is the reductive hydrogenation of MN to generate ammonia due to the formation of kinetically stable M-NH1-3 species. In this study, we found that TiN can be circumvented photochemically with supported single atoms and clusters of platinum (Pt-1-Pt-n) under N-2-H-2 conditions, leading to the selective formation of Ti-NH and effective transformation of Ti-NH into free ammonia. This fundamental research can potentially disrupt the century-old fossil-powered Haber-Bosch process.

Functional Group Modulation in Carbon Quantum Dots for Accelerating Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Zhikang Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the enhanced photocatalytic performance of carbon quantum dot (CQD)-induced photocatalysts. Red luminescent CQDs (R-CQDs) with different surface functional group sites were synthesized and combined with graphitic carbon nitride (CN) using a coupling technique. The R-CQDs/CN photocatalysts showed significantly improved CO2 reduction, attributed to narrowed band gap, less recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes, enhanced deoxygenation ability, increased light absorption, and higher carrier concentration. The superior performance of R1-CQDs/CN was attributed to its strong internal electric field and high Lewis acidity and alkalinity, attributed to abundant pyrrolic-N and oxygen-containing surface groups. These findings offer a promising strategy for producing efficient and sustainable CQD-based photocatalysts.

Metallic AgInS2 nanocrystals with sulfur vacancies boost atmospheric CO2 photoreduction under near-infrared light illumination

Summary: This study investigates the influence of vacancy engineering on intrinsic CO2 photoreduction with low photon energy directly from air. The authors designed a metallic photocatalyst, V-S-AgInS2 nanocrystals, which exhibited superior atmospheric CO2 reduction performance under near-infrared light. The presence of sulfur vacancies and metallic characteristics in the nanocrystals resulted in extended spectrum absorption and efficient charge carrier separation. The experimental and theoretical results showed that charge delocalization around the vacancy-induced dual sites promoted CO production while inhibiting the formation of CHO intermediates. Consequently, the metallic VS-AgInS2 nanocrystals achieved nearly 100% selective CO production under NIR irradiation.
