Bidirectional Atomic Iron Catalysis of Sulfur Redox Conversion in High-Energy Flexible Zn-S Battery

Weiwei Zhang et al.

Summary: To fully utilize the potential of high energy Zn-S electrochemistry, the inefficiency and high reactivation energy barrier associated with sulfur cathodes in battery discharging and recharging need to be addressed. An experiment and theoretical prediction suggest that atomically dispersed Fe sites with Fe-N-4 coordination can serve as bidirectional electrocatalytic hotspots, enabling complete sulfur conversion and reducing the energy barrier of ZnS decomposition. The Fe sites facilitate sulfur and zinc polysulfide adsorption, leading to almost complete sulfur to ZnS conversion during discharge and reversible charging back to S during recharging.

Bifunctional electrolyte additive with redox mediation and capacity contribution for sulfur cathode in aqueous Zn-S batteries

Ge Chang et al.

Summary: A novel bifunctional electrolyte additive thiourea (TU) was introduced to improve the reaction kinetics and cycle stability of aqueous zinc-sulfur (Zn-S) battery. TU can undergo reversible redox reactions, enhancing the reversibility between ZnS and S and providing extra capacities. The mechanism of TU on the S@KB electrode was proposed, involving the interaction between TU intermediates and ZnS to weaken the Zn-S bonds and inhibit the formation of irreversible by-product. The S@KB electrode exhibited excellent cyclic performance with low decay rate of 0.11% per cycle after 300 cycles at 5 A/g.

The key role of concentrated Zn(OTF)2 electrolyte in the performance of aqueous Zn-S batteries

Zhao Xu et al.

Summary: This communication systematically illustrates the electrolyte chemistry in aqueous Zn-S batteries. Compared to Zn(AC)(2) and ZnSO4, Zn(OTF)(2) electrolyte shows better electrochemical performance due to the impact of larger CF3SO3- anions on the solvation shell structure of Zn2+. Moreover, a reversible capacity of 788 mA h g(-1) is obtained in concentrated Zn(OTF)(2) electrolyte (3 M) with higher retention due to higher Zn-nucleation overpotential and slower corrosion reactions.
