Copper-cysteamine nanoparticle-mediated microwave dynamic therapy improves cancer treatment with induction of ferroptosis

Hui Zhou et al.

Summary: This study reports a promising cancer treatment using microwave-induced copper-cysteamine (Cu-Cy) nanoparticles-based photodynamic therapy (PDT) in combination with ferroptosis. The results show that Cu-Cy can effectively destroy colorectal cancer cells under microwave irradiation, and the cytotoxicity can be alleviated by a ferroptosis inhibitor. Overall, Cu-Cy nanoparticles have a safe and effective clinical application prospect in treating deep-seated tumors and inhibiting tumor cell proliferation by inducing ferroptosis, providing a potential solution for cancer resistance.

Study of copper-cysteamine based X-ray induced photodynamic therapy and its effects on cancer cell proliferation and migration in a clinical mimic setting

Xiangyu Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the treatment efficiency of Cu-Cy based X-PDT under clinical conditions, using a clinical linear accelerator and deep-seated tumor models. The results showed that Cu-Cy nanoparticles had low toxicity in cells at a low concentration, and Cu-Cy mediated X-PDT can inhibit cell proliferation and migration in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, this therapy inhibited the growth of deep-seated tumors in mice and rabbits without obvious toxicities. These findings suggest that Cu-Cy NPs have a promising clinical application prospect in X-PDT.

Immunomodulatory-Photodynamic Nanostimulators for Invoking Pyroptosis to Augment Tumor Immunotherapy

Wei Qiu et al.

Summary: This study introduces MRC nanoparticles that utilize the acidic tumor microenvironment to induce pyroptosis and enhance immune efficacy by delivering immune agonists and photosensitizers. The results show that this novel approach can remodel the tumor microenvironment and increase antitumor immunity. The study also provides insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying these therapeutic effects.

ROS-responsive cyclodextrin nanoplatform for combined photodynamic therapy and chemotherapy of cancer

Die Jia et al.

Summary: Cyclodextrin is widely used for constructing CD-based nanoplatforms due to its special spatial structure and good biological safety. The study designed a highly sensitive ROS-responsive polymer PCP encapsulating doxorubicin (DOX) and purpurin 18 (P18) for synergistic photodynamic and chemotherapy effects. The micelles showed enhanced anti-cancer activity through the release of drugs triggered by ROS in the tumor microenvironment.

Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Combined with Cytosine Arabinoside Show Anti-Leukemia Stem Cell Effects on Acute Myeloid Leukemia by Regulating Reactive Oxygen Species

Jun Dou et al.

Summary: The study found that nanozyme-like Fe3O4 nanoparticles (IONPs) combined with cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C) effectively reduced the AML burden in mice engrafted with leukemia stem cells (LSCs) and extended mouse survival by increasing LSC's reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels to induce LSC apoptosis. The results suggest that targeting LSCs with IONPs plus Ara-C could control AML relapse.

Novel perspective in pancreatic cancer therapy: Targeting ferroptosis pathway

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: Ferroptosis is a novel form of cell death that plays a significant role in the occurrence and development of various tumors, including pancreatic cancer. Regulating ferroptosis-induced cell death in pancreatic cancer can inhibit tumor growth and enhance treatment sensitivity when combined with other antitumor drugs.

Iron-based nanoparticles for MR imaging-guided ferroptosis in combination with photodynamic therapy to enhance cancer treatment

Qifang Chen et al.

Summary: The nanosystem designed in this study, coated with FDA approved PLGA, Fe3O4, and Ce6, is capable of synergistic ferroptosis-photodynamic anticancer therapy by releasing ferrous/ferric ions and Ce6 in the acidic TME for Fenton reaction and ROS generation under laser irradiation. The nanosystem also possesses excellent MRI properties and highly efficient tumor suppression in vivo due to the synergism of photodynamic and ferroptosis antitumor therapies.
