Growth of titania and tin oxide from Ti2SnC via rapid thermal oxidation in air for lithium-ion battery application

Shae Jolly et al.

Summary: We synthesized TiO2-SnO2-C/carbide hybrid electrode materials for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) by oxidizing layered Ti2SnC using two different methods. The oxidized materials were tested as an anode in a half cell for their electrochemical performance in LIBs. The highest initial lithiation capacity of 838 mAh/g was achieved with the sample oxidized in an open-air furnace at 700 degrees C for 1 h, but the delithiation capacity dropped to 427 mAh/g over cycling. Long-term cycling showed that the sample treated with rapid thermal annealing at 800 degrees C for 30 s exhibited the most efficient performance with a reversible capacity of around 270 mAh/g after 150 cycles and a specific capacity of about 150 mAh/g under high cycling rate (2000 mA/g).

An optimized method for synthesizing phase-pure Ti3AlC2 MAX-phase through spark plasma sintering

Mohammad Yunus et al.

Summary: Despite attempts to synthesize phase-pure Ti3AlC2 MAX-phase, the presence of TiC and Ti-Al based intermetallic impurities remains a challenge, with a lack of stability observed at temperatures above 1350 degrees C. This study presents an optimized method for producing phase-pure Ti3AlC2 MAX-phase with high purity using commercial grade Ti, Al, and C elemental powders through Spark Plasma Sintering technique, demonstrating good high temperature stability up to 1500 degrees C under flowing Argon inert atmosphere.

Recent trends in the development of MXenes and MXene-based composites as anode materials for Li-ion batteries

Hamed Aghamohammadi et al.

Summary: MXenes, as 2D nanomaterials, have shown great potential in energy applications, especially in Li-ion batteries. However, the restacking issue limits their storage capability. Increasing the interlayer spacing, changing functional groups, and synthesizing few-layered MXenes are effective approaches to improve the storage capability. MXene-based composites can address the restacking issue and enhance the performance of high-capacity anode materials.

Oxidation mechanism of MAX phases (Ti3AlC2 powders) with and without Sn doping

Chunyu Guo et al.

Summary: The oxidation behaviors of Ti3AlC2 and Ti3Al0.8Sn0.2C2 powders in air have been compared, with the conclusion that Sn doping can decrease the oxidation resistance of Ti3AlC2 due to its weakening effect on the Ti-Al bonds. The oxidation behaviors of both powders vary significantly depending on the temperature, and the real physical picture (RPP) model further confirms the accelerating effect of Sn doping on the oxidation process of Ti3AlC2 powders.
