Simultaneously enhanced separation and antifouling properties by synergistic effect of pore-formation and surface segregation through incorporating bowl-like amphiphiles

Sisi Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, a new strategy was proposed to improve the separation and antifouling properties of EVAL membranes using natural macrocyclic amphiphiles, cyclodextrins (CDs). The amphiphilic nature of CDs induced spontaneous surface segregation during membrane formation, resulting in CD-enriched layers that played a dual role of pore formation and antifouling enhancement. The introduction of CDs increased the roughness, hydrophilicity, and porosity of the membranes, leading to excellent mechanical properties and high water flux with superior rejection to proteins and dyes. The addition of CDs and octanol as dual pore formers demonstrated the fabrication of hydrophilic antifouling membranes for efficient separation.

In-situ assembly of polyelectrolyte via surface segregation of titanium oxide for antifouling membranes

Mengying Long et al.

Summary: Membrane separation technology faces the challenge of membrane fouling, which can be overcome by introducing hydrophilic polyelectrolyte through modification methods. In this study, antifouling membranes with high flux recovery ratio were developed using a surface segregation method. The membranes were designed through coordination and hydrogen bond interactions between hydrolyzed tetra-butyl titanate (TBT) and poly(sodium-styrene-sulfonate) (PSS). The PSS modified membrane surface formed a strong hydration layer to resist oil pollutants and enhanced electrostatic repulsion effect. The membranes exhibited high antifouling performance and provided a facile and general strategy for environmental and bioengineering applications.

Sulfonated TiO2 quantum dots enabled constructing of bicarbonate highways in quaternary ammonium poly (ether ether ketone) membranes for efficient CO2 separation

Jiale Gao et al.

Summary: Polyelectrolyte-based mixed matrix membranes with quaternary ammonium poly (ether ether ketone) as the polymer matrix and nanoscale sulfonated TiO2 quantum dots as the functional filler were synthesized. The incorporation of the filler induced the formation of segregated and ordered ionic cluster domains, leading to enhanced CO2 permeability and selectivity. The role of the filler as a structure modifier was elucidated, and the membranes showed comparable separation performance even without alkaline treatment.

Interfacial coordination mediated surface segregation of halloysite nanotubes to construct a high-flux antifouling membrane for oil-water emulsion separation

Zhongxiang Bai et al.

Summary: Forced surface segregation of hydrophilic nanoparticles on a hydrophobic polymer matrix is effective for fabricating high performance hybrid membranes for oil/water separation. The interfacial coordination between TA and Fe3+ enhances the surface segregation of hydrophilic NPs, leading to increased water flux and high rejection rates. This strategy can also prevent loss of nanotubes during phase transitions, resulting in improved membrane performance.
