A critical review on production, modification and utilization of biochar

Yanqi Xie et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been increased interest in sustainable production of biochar, which has versatile physicochemical properties and wide applicability. However, research is lacking in correlating biochar properties with feedstock, production processes, and upgrading strategies. Establishing such correlations is necessary for producing biochar with desired properties and for predicting its physiochemical properties based on feedstock and production conditions. This review summarizes literature on the impact of feedstocks and production processes on biochar properties and provides recommendations for mapping out biochar production for different applications. Further research is needed to address knowledge gaps and improve biochar characterization and production.

Catalytic pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass for bio-oil production: A review

Yi Wang et al.

Summary: This review summarizes recent findings on bio-oil production through catalytic pyrolysis using lignocellulosic biomass as feedstock. It explores and summarizes lignocellulosic biomass, structural components, and fundamentals of biomass catalytic pyrolysis. The current status of bio-oil yield and quality from catalytic fast pyrolysis is reviewed, and the potential effects of pyrolysis process parameters on bio-oil production are discussed. Techno-economic analysis and future prospects of catalytic pyrolysis for bio-oil production are also presented in this review.

Thermochemical production of bio-oil: A review of downstream processing technologies for bio-oil upgrading, production of hydrogen and high value-added products

R. Kumar et al.

Summary: Methods for downstream bio-oil upgrading include hydrotreatment, solvent addition, emulsification, microfiltration, and electrocatalytic hydrogenation, which can significantly improve bio-oil properties. Using non-polar solvents or preparing emulsions can increase bio-oil calorific values and decrease viscosity.

Understanding the Dechlorination of Chlorinated Hydrocarbons in the Pyrolysis of Mixed Plastics

Guozhan Jiang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the dechlorination mechanism of chlorinated hydrocarbons by alkali adsorption in pyrolysis vapor, finding that the dechlorination process depends on the bonding between chlorine, adjacent aliphatic carbon, and aliphatic hydrogen. Experiment results showed that aliphatic chlorinated hydrocarbons can undergo dechlorination at 180 degrees C in the presence of alkali, while the removal of chlorine from aromatic chlorinated compounds operates differently and is significantly promoted by the presence of alumina and hydrocarbon medium.

Life cycle environmental impacts of chemical recycling via pyrolysis of mixed plastic waste in comparison with mechanical recycling and energy recovery

Harish Jeswani et al.

Summary: The study compares the environmental impacts of chemical recycling through pyrolysis with other plastics waste management options and virgin plastics production. Results indicate that pyrolysis has lower climate change impact and life cycle energy use, but higher other impacts compared to mechanical recycling, energy recovery, and virgin plastics production.
