Differences in exopolysaccharides of three microbial aggregates

Fan Yang et al.

Summary: Different microbial aggregates show substantial differences in morphology, size, shape, and density, which are affected by the properties of their exopolysaccharides. The hydrophobicity, surface charge, and functional groups of exopolysaccharides play a crucial role in microbial aggregation. The hydrogen bond content in exopolysaccharides influences the cross-linking to form hydrogels and ultimately affects the aggregation morphology of microbial aggregates.

The Formation of Spore-Like Akinetes: A Survival Strategy of Filamentous Cyanobacteria

Ritu Garg et al.

Summary: Some cyanobacteria of the order Nostocales can form spore-like akinetes for survival in unfavorable environmental conditions. These akinetes are larger in size, contain abundant reserve products, and can germinate into new vegetative cells. The production of the storage polymer cyanophycin is not essential for the formation and germination of akinetes in a filamentous cyanobacterium Anabaena variabilis ATCC 29413.

Acute cadmium toxicity and post-stress recovery: Insights into coordinated and integrated response/recovery strategies of Anabaena sp. PCC 7120

Akanksha Srivastava et al.

Summary: The study revealed that acute Cd stress induced Cd accumulation and ROS production in Anabaena cells, leading to reduced photosynthetic efficiency. During post-stress recovery, Anabaena reprogrammed the expression pattern of proteins/genes involved in cellular defense and repair in a coordinated manner, facilitating detoxification of Cd and repair of cellular damage.

Coexistence of Communicating and Noncommunicating Cells in the Filamentous Cyanobacterium Anabaena

Sergio Arevalo et al.

Summary: The study reveals that in cyanobacteria, intercellular communication is mediated through septal junctions and nanopores, with coordinated regulation of septal junctions observed in cell. Intercellular exchange in response to nitrogen deprivation, ammonium, and nitrate assimilation varies, indicating the importance of these structures in multicellular behavior of heterocyst-forming cyanobacteria.

Quantitative Proteomics Reveals the Protein Regulatory Network of Anabaena sp. PCC 7120 under Nitrogen Deficiency

Qi Zhang et al.

Summary: A label-free quantitative proteomic strategy was used to investigate the nitrogen deficiency response of Anabaena 7120, revealing significant changes in protein abundance at different time points. The study also uncovered proteomic perturbation and regulation of carbon and nitrogen metabolism under nitrogen deficiency, with time-specific dysregulated proteins involved in heterocyst development. These results provide novel insights into the molecular mechanisms of nitrogen stress responses and heterocyst development in Anabaena 7120.

Insight into the adhesion propensities of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) on the abiotic surface using XDLVO theory

Cheng-cheng Ji et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adhesion behaviors of sEPS and bEPS from Chlorella vulgaris on different surfaces. It was found that bEPS exhibited higher adhesion propensity than sEPS, especially on PTFE surface. According to the XDLVO theory, the Lewis acid-base interfacial free energy of algal EPS played a key role in determining adhesion behavior, while DOC was shown to be a more suitable index for describing EPS adhesion.
