M. A. S. M. Hassan et al.

Summary: This study tested a model of an air-cooled underbone motorcycle valve, valve seat, and engine cylinder head to determine their thermal characteristics under actual engine operating conditions at low, medium, and high engine speeds. A three-dimensional model was prepared using the ANSYS software package, and the results showed that as the engine speed increases, so does the thermal load on the engine cylinder head. The research provides valuable information for analyzing the heat characterization of air-cooled engines and can be useful for the automotive industry and other thermal measurement researchers.

Determination of a heat transfer correlation for small internal combustion engines

Christopher Depcik et al.

Summary: Small internal combustion engines with displacements < 100 cm3 have high surface area-to-volume ratios that enhance heat transfer in the combustion chamber walls, resulting in lower fuel conversion efficiency. This paper reviews literature correlations to determine their applicability for small engines and develops an appropriate heat transfer expression for a specific two-stroke engine. The developed expression shows good confidence in predicting power and in-cylinder pressure.

Heat Transfer in Thermoelectric Generators for Waste Energy Recovery in Piston Engines

Pablo Fernandez-Yanez et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the design of a thermoelectric generator for exhaust gases from internal combustion engines, using experimentally validated CFD methodology. The influence of replacing the exhaust pipe, recirculation, and fins were studied. The results show that enlarging the inlet cone reduces recirculation and pressure drop, but also increases heat loss. Internal straight fins aligned with the flow increase heat transfer and reduce the effects of recirculation, resulting in a net energy production of 160.7 W. A comparison with a flat-type thermoelectric generator is also provided.

Energy and exergy analyses of hydrogen-fueled spark ignition engine with various air excess ratios and ignition timings

Seunghyun Lee et al.

Summary: This study conducted experiments on a commercial automotive spark ignition engine and found that retarding ignition timing leads to an increase in exhaust exergy loss and a decrease in heat transfer exergy loss under the same excess air ratio. When considering different excess air ratios, the heat transfer exergy loss increased while the exhaust exergy loss decreased, and irreversibility was maintained at approximately 10%. The relationship between the thermo-mechanical exergy rise rate and the behavior of each exergy component was also examined.

Summary: Diesel engines are the primary power source for the trucking industry, but they face challenges of reduced thermal efficiency and increased emissions when operated at high altitudes. This study investigates the impact of altitude on in-cylinder heat transfer characteristics in diesel engines. Experimental results show that high altitudes lead to higher bulk temperatures and increased heat loss. Therefore, the application of thermal coatings to improve fuel economy is crucial in high altitude regions.
