Synergistic effects of the use of metakaolin, sand and water on the properties of cementitious composites for 3D printing

Hugo Alessandro Almeida Diniz et al.

Summary: 3D concrete printing is a construction technique that allows for the deposition of cementitious composite in a continuous flow using a 3D printing nozzle. This study investigated the influence of incorporating Metakaolin, sand, and water on the extrusion capabilities and buildability of cementitious composites for 3D printing. The results showed that the water/binder ratio was the most important factor affecting extrusion capacity, while increasing sand content improved buildability but reduced application time. Metakaolin was found to control viscosity and maintain good fluidity over time, and its interaction with sand improved extrusion properties.

Mechanical and microstructural properties of 3D printable concrete in the context of the twin-pipe pumping strategy

Yaxin Tao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanical properties and microstructural characteristics of 3D printed specimens made using the TPP system. It was found that cracks initiated within the limestone powder-based striations and there were significant differences in mechanical strength for specimens loaded in different directions. Microstructural analysis revealed that the volume of macropores in the 3D printed specimens, primarily located in the limestone powder-based striations, had a detrimental effect on compressive strength.

3D printable concrete with natural and recycled coarse aggregates: Rheological, mechanical and shrinkage behaviour

A. V. Rahul et al.

Summary: The study found that using natural and recycled coarse aggregates in 3D printable concrete can decrease the flowability of the concrete, but reducing the superplasticizer dosage can achieve similar buildability to control mixtures. Both mixtures with natural and recycled coarse aggregates exhibited lower compression and flexural strength, but showed better performance in terms of autogenous shrinkage.

Effect of drying environment on mechanical properties, internal RH and pore structure of 3D printed concrete

Lei Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of drying, wind, and exposed area on the mechanical properties of 3D printed concrete. It was found that curing conditions significantly influenced the compressive and flexural strength development of samples. Samples cut from printed elements were more sensitive to curing conditions compared to cast specimens. Evidence from pore structure explained the differences observed in samples cut from printed elements.

Analysis of the mechanical performance and damage mechanism for 3D printed concrete based on pore structure

Chao Liu et al.

Summary: The pore structure of 3D printed concrete is different from traditional cast concrete, with irregular shapes that are prone to stress concentration, resulting in lower mechanical strength. Additionally, 3D printed concrete displays significant anisotropy in mechanical strength, with variations in the relationship between pore structure and strength when compressed in different directions. The ultimate compressive strength and damage mechanism of 3D printed concrete were analyzed based on a parallel pore connection model.

Design and analyses of printable strain hardening cementitious composites with optimized particle size distribution

Anne Linde van Overmeir et al.

Summary: Since the development of three-dimensional concrete printing (3DCP), strain hardening cementitious composites (SHCC) have been shown to have potential as a self-reinforcing printable mortar. However, there is limited research on achieving sufficient buildability with printable SHCC. This study investigates the role of particle size distribution (PSD) in relation to buildability properties and strain hardening properties. The research shows that optimizing the PSD improves buildability but can decrease pumpability and strain hardening capacity.
