Effects of pre-fatigue damages on ultimate strength of steel columns: From material to structure

Zhanzhan Tang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of pre-fatigue damage on the residual mechanical properties of Q345 steel and develops a stress-strain relation model based on material tests. Numerical results show that pre-fatigue damage reduces the yield stress, ultimate stress, and ductility of the steel, while the ultimate strength of thin-walled steel columns decreases significantly with increasing pre-fatigue damage level.

Visualization investigation of defects in structural steel materials with electrical resistance tomography

Shuanfeng Zhao et al.

Summary: This study proposes a visualisation method using electrical resistance tomography (ERT) to detect internal defects in structural steel. A 3D-ERT system was developed independently, which can locate and estimate the size of defects in structural steel. The research not only provides a novel idea for non-destructive testing of structural steel but also expands the application scope of ERT technology.

Experimental program for characterization of ultra low-cycle fatigue fracture in structural steel

Adrian Tola et al.

Summary: The article discusses the cyclic inelastic strains and ultra-low cycle fatigue fracture of structural steel components under extreme loading events. Experimental tests and finite element analysis were conducted to study the local stress and deformation states of 60 circumferentially notched samples under different stress conditions. The importance of experimental tests in reliably characterizing ultra-low cycle fatigue in structural steel is demonstrated through calibration of existing criteria.

Mechanical properties of Q345 structural steel after artificial cooling from elevated temperatures

Chuntao Zhang et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of Q345 steel undergo significant changes at different temperatures and with different cooling methods. Exposure to temperatures of 800-900 degrees C and cooling with water increases the yield strength and ultimate strength of the steel, while exposure to temperatures of 600-900 degrees C and cooling with firefighting foam results in a reduction in yield strength and ultimate strength. Additionally, the ductility of the steel also varies depending on the temperature and cooling method used.
