Effect of near-fault vertical ground motions on failure mode of long-span sea-crossing cable-stayed bridges

Jian Zhong et al.

Summary: Existing investigations have shown that near-fault vertical ground motion (VGM) has a significant impact on the seismic performance of bridge structures. This study examines the combined effect of VGM and horizontal ground motion (HGM) on the failure mode and component damage sequence of long-span sea-crossing cable-stayed bridges. The results indicate that VGM has little effect on the damage probability of the bearings, but has an adverse effect on the damage probability of the pylons and piers.

GPDEM-based stochastic seismic response analysis of high concrete-faced rockfill dam with spatial variability of rockfill properties based on plastic deformation

Yichuan Li et al.

Summary: A probabilistic analysis method named the generalized probability density evolution method (GPDEM) combined with random fields generated by K-L decomposition was proposed for evaluating the stochastic seismic responses of concrete-faced rockfill dams (CFRDs). The study found that the control parameter and cross-correlation coefficient significantly influenced the stochastic seismic response, with the nonfaced-slab side being more sensitive to rockfill uncertainties. The research highlights the importance of understanding and accounting for rockfill spatial variability in seismic analysis.

Stochastic seismic analysis of geosynthetic-reinforced soil slopes using the probability density evolution method

Ming Peng et al.

Summary: This study conducted a stochastic seismic analysis of GRSS using PDEM, which is proven to be more accurate and efficient compared to other methods. The reinforcement length has the most substantial influence on the failure probability, with reinforcement strain increasing and slope displacement decreasing with reinforcement length.

A theoretical framework for optimization of three-dimensional slope stability monitoring

Zhen Liu et al.

Summary: This study presents a theoretical framework for monitoring slope stability efficiently and cost-effectively, achieving optimal arrangement of monitoring points using strength reduction finite element analysis and redundancy optimization analysis. The research findings indicate that as the reduction coefficient increases, the plastic zone inside the slope expands while the shear strength of the soil decreases. Simulation results also demonstrate that the horizontal displacement of the slope reaches its maximum value in a region approximately 12 meters from the toe of the slope.

3rd-order Spectral Representation Method: Simulation of multi-dimensional random fields and ergodic multi-variate random processes with fast Fourier transform implementation

Lohit Vandanapu et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a generalized 3rd-order Spectral Representation Method for simulating multi-dimensional random fields and ergodic multi-variate stochastic processes. The method can be efficiently implemented with the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), showing exponential computational savings with dimensionality increase. Differences between the proposed method and classical Spectral Representation Method in sample generation are analyzed, and a formula for simulating multi-variate random processes is developed.

Seismic time-history response and system reliability analysis of slopes considering uncertainty of multi-parameters and earthquake excitations

Rui Pang et al.

Summary: In this study, the impact of uncertain parameters and stochastic ground motions on seismic responses and dynamic failure probabilities of slopes was analyzed using the generalized probability density evolution method (GPDEM). The efficiency and accuracy of GPDEM in complex slopes were validated, demonstrating its high accuracy and validity. Results also indicated that randomness in ground motions has a greater influence than randomness in slope parameters.

A three-dimensional large-deformation random finite-element study of landslide runout considering spatially varying soil

Xuejian Chen et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the runout process of landslides induced by earthquakes in spatially varying soil using Monte Carlo simulation and 3D dynamic large-deformation finite-element analysis. The results show that in 3D-LDFE analysis, the runout distance increases with slope length and is at least 16.1% higher than that of 2D-LDFE analysis.
