Experimental investigation on the structural behaviour of novel non-metallic pultruded circular tubular GFRP T-joints under axial compression

Thumitha Mandula Higgoda et al.

Summary: Uniplanar T-joints made from pultruded glass-fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) circular tubular sections (CHS) with innovative reinforcements, such as carbon-fibre laminates (CFRP) and concrete-filled GFRP rods, showed superior strength and ductility compared to T-joints without any connection reinforcements. The use of CFRP wrapping and concrete filling led to significant increases in strength and ductility. Design equations and analytical formulations were developed and compared with experimental results. These novel connections are recommended for offshore tubular structures.

Pullwinding technique for realizing hybrid roving architecture in pultruded GFRP composites

TianQiao Liu et al.

Summary: In this work, the pullwinding technique is utilized to achieve a hybrid roving architecture in pultruded GFRP composites, resulting in improved transverse properties and flexural performance of GFRP beams. Material characterization and bending tests were conducted to evaluate the mechanical performance of the pullwound composites and the flexural behavior of pullwound box-beams. Analytical study and finite element modeling were performed to calculate and assess the strength and stability limit states of the pullwound beams. The hybrid roving architecture effectively reduces material orthotropy, leading to enhanced transverse properties and flexural performance of GFRP composites.

Experimental and numerical investigation of pultruded GFRP circular hollow tubular columns under concentric and eccentric loading

Thumitha Mandula Higgoda et al.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental investigation of pultruded GFRP CHS columns under concentric and eccentric compression. Different slenderness values and eccentricities were considered. Longitudinal splitting and localized delamination buckling were observed as the main failure modes. The load-carrying capacities of the concentric column under different slenderness values were compared with design rules. Under eccentric loading, the ultimate loads decrease with increasing eccentricity and slenderness, while the load-strain behavior shows non-linear characteristics due to geometric non-linearity. The FE models predicted the failure modes well, with material splitting due to hoop matrix tensile rupture.

Non-uniform fiber-resin distributions of pultruded GFRP profiles

Peng Feng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the non-uniform fiber-resin distribution in pultruded glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) profiles and analyzes its impact on the mechanical properties of the profiles. The results show that the degree of non-uniformity varies for different types of profiles, with I-sections exhibiting the most significant material non-uniformity. Additionally, the non-uniform fiber-resin distribution increases the initial section eccentricity, thus reducing the critical buckling loads of GFRP compressive members.

Underwater strengthening and repairing of tubular offshore structural members using Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymers with different consolidation methods

Jerin Mathew George et al.

Summary: This paper investigates strengthening and repairing of offshore steel tubular members using Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymers (CFRPs) with the help of experimental testing and an analytical study. Full length strengthening for underwater leg specimens were experimentally tested and it was found to improve the structural behaviour in many aspects. Underwater vacuum consolidation proved to be advantageous compared to the normal underwater stricture consolidation.

Load bearing capacity of GFRP-strengthened tubular T-joints: Experimental and numerical study

Mohammad Lesani et al.

Summary: Strengthening tubular joints with GFRP can significantly increase their load-bearing capacity and stiffness. The potential debonding areas are at the intersection of the saddle and crown lines. The effectiveness of GFRP reinforcement is reduced by higher joint diameter ratios and chord thinness ratios, but the joint thickness ratio has little effect on the reinforcement.

Flexural response of underwater offshore structural members retrofitted with CFRP wraps and their performance after exposure to real marine conditions

Jerin M. George et al.

Summary: This paper investigated the strengthening and repairing of offshore steel tubular members using CFRPs. The study found that CFRP was effective in repairing corroded steel tubular members and improving the performance of the members. Furthermore, the durability of CFRP retrofitted tubular members was found to be satisfactory even under underwater conditions.

Flexural behaviour of pultruded circular tubular GFRP composite truss bridges with novel non-corrosive connections

Thumitha Mandula Higgoda et al.

Summary: This study proposes multiplanar truss bridges made of glass-fibre reinforced polymer circular tubular profiles with innovative non-metallic connections. Through testing and calculation analysis, the performance and load capacity of these bridges were evaluated. The results show that the use of GFRP rods and GFRP wrapping in the connections can improve the ultimate strength and ductility of the bridges.

Investigation on the structural failure behaviour of pultruded circular tubular GFRP multiplanar truss bridges with non-metallic connections through finite element modelling

Thumitha Mandula Higgoda et al.

Summary: Finite element method was used to study the failure of member connections in GFRP multiplanar truss bridges. The adhesive failure of the brace was found to occur progressively around its perimeter, with GFRP laminate failure observed after adhesive bond failure. The failure sequence of the GFRP laminate and adhesive bonding was dependent on the brace wall thickness. The predicted fiber tensile rupture of the GFRP laminate was greater for cement mortar grouted GFRP rods than non-GFRP grouted rods.

Experimental investigation on the moment-rotation performance of pultruded FRP web-flange junctions

Gisele G. Cintra et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the rotational stiffness behavior of WFJs in FRP, monitoring relative rotations between the web and flange using DIC technique. Lower bound functions were proposed to simulate junction stiffness retention, and two equations were developed to predict rotational stiffness per unit of width for pultruded joints. The theoretical and experimental results agreed fairly well, with maximum differences of 24% for I-sections and 38% for channels.

Compressive behaviour of hollow box pultruded FRP columns with continuous-wound fibres

Omar Alajarmeh et al.

Summary: Research on the compressive behavior of Pultruded Fibre Reinforced Polymer (PFRP) profiles reveals that continuous-wound fibers help prevent splitting failure and result in better structural performance in rectangular profiles compared to square profiles. Increasing the Length-to-Depth (L/D) ratio improves displacement buckling capacity but reduces stiffness and strength.

Review on Local Buckling of Hollow Box FRP Profiles in Civil Structural Applications

Mohammad Alhawamdeh et al.

Summary: Hollow box pultruded fibre-reinforced polymers (PFRP) profiles are increasingly popular in structural applications due to their cost-effective manufacturing process, excellent mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance. Despite their extensive usage, there is still a lack of understanding in designing against local buckling. Different cross-sectional shapes of PFRP profiles exhibit different behaviors in local buckling, with the potential to avoid local buckling in box profiles through geometric optimization. Further research is needed to address critical design parameters and interactions controlling local buckling in pulwound box FRP profiles.
