The role of wind-wave related processes in redistributing river-derived terrigenous sediments in Lake Turkana: A modelling study

Florin Zainescu et al.

Summary: This study simulated the complete annual dynamics of fine-grained sediment in Lake Turkana, one of the world's large lakes, using the Delft3D model. The model successfully validated the simulation results and found that wind-waves can be the main agent in transporting sediment away from river mouths to deeper areas.

A Chronology-Based Wave Input Reduction Technique for Simulations of Long-Term Coastal Morphological Changes: An Application to the Beach of Mastichari, Kos Island, Greece

Dimitra I. Malliouri et al.

Summary: The main objective of this paper is to simulate the long-term morphological evolution of a coastal area in Greece due to wind-generated waves in an accurate and cost-effective way. Wave climate schematization techniques are adopted to reduce computational effort, and a novel chronology-based wave input reduction method is developed. The new method achieves a model run-time reduction of about 70% while providing satisfactory results. This research is valuable for coastal engineering studies and coastal zone monitoring, serving as a useful tool for coastal engineers and marine scientists.

Multi-decadal shoreline change, inherited coastal morphology and sediment supply in the Souss-Massa littoral cell (Morocco), and a prognosis with sea-level rise

M'hamed Nmiss et al.

Summary: Understanding the long-term evolution of shorelines is crucial for coastal management and scientific research, especially with rising sea levels caused by climate change. This study focuses on the wave-exposed Atlantic coast of Morocco south of Agadir, which consists of lithified aeolianite cliffs, shore platforms, and mobile aeolian dunes. Using aerial photographs, satellite images, and beach topography monitoring, the researchers analyzed the multi-decadal geomorphic evolution of the Massa coastal sector and identified the main drivers of this evolution. The study found that the long-term pattern is controlled by a balance between erosional cliff lines, aeolian dune sand accumulation, and longshore sediment transport. The beaches also show a seasonal regime with erosion in winter and accretion in summer. The future sediment-budget equilibrium of the area will depend on the continuity of sediment supply sources, including the aeolianite cliffs, aeolian dunes, and wave-dominated shoreface.
