Improved bycatch reduction in the mixed demersal trawl fishery for Norway pout (Trisopterus esmarkii)

Eduardo Grimaldo et al.

Summary: In this study, the effectiveness of a trawl with a standard rigid sorting grid was compared to a trawl with a newly developed flexible system called the Excluder in reducing bycatch. Fishing trials were conducted in the Norwegian pout small-meshed trawl fishery in the North Sea. The Excluder significantly reduced the bycatch of multiple species, while only slightly decreasing the catch efficiency of Norwegian pout. This research highlights the potential of the Excluder in reducing bycatch, but also raises concerns about its impact on fishery profitability.

Effects of Inclination Angles on the Hydrodynamics of Knotless Net Panels in Currents

Gang Wang et al.

Summary: Knotless nets have practical implications for aquaculture pens, but the effects of inclination angles on flow patterns have not been fully discussed. This study investigates the effects of inclination angles on flow fields and velocity reductions using a high-fidelity turbulence model. The results show that the inclination angles have dominant effects on velocity magnitudes and flow interactions among net meshes.

Juvenile redfish (Sebastes spp.) behavior in response to Nordmore grid systems in the offshore northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis) fishery of Eastern Canada

Tomas Araya-Schmidt et al.

Summary: This study investigated the behavior of juvenile redfish in response to bycatch reduction devices (BRDs) called Nordmore grids. It found that over half of the redfish passed through the bar spacings of the grids and were retained. The results of the study suggest that the duration of time in front of the grid and the upward or steady grid reactions of the redfish significantly affected their retention.

PIV Study on Grid-Generated Turbulence in a Free Surface Flow

Haoyu Yao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the development of turbulence behind a filter device in a current flow using a 2D Particle Image Velocimetry system. Measurements on vertical and horizontal sections reveal the evolution and depth diversity of grid turbulence in free surface flow. Results show a transition behavior of the grid-generated flow from perturbations to fully merged homogeneous turbulence, with velocity and turbulence intensity distributions becoming more uniform and integral scale spatial divergence becoming more pronounced downstream.

Identifying the turbulent flow developing inside and around the bottom trawl by Electromagnetic Current Velocity Meter approach in the flume tank

Nyatchouba Nsangue Bruno Thierry et al.

Summary: The study reveals the presence of turbulent flow inside and around the bottom trawl net, with significant differences in flow intensity and velocity ratio among different parts. Increasing input streamwise velocity leads to faster trawl movement and significant turbulence. Turbulent flow behavior is strongly influenced by structural oscillation, velocity, and net porosity.

Comparison between physical model testing and numerical simulation using two-way fluid-structure interaction approach of new trawl design for coastal bottom trawl net

Bruno Thierry Nyatchouba Nsangue et al.

Summary: The hydrodynamic performance of a scaled bottom trawl model in current was investigated using numerical simulations and flume tank tests. Both the numerical and experimental results indicated that increasing mesh size and decreasing twine diameter significantly reduced drag force. The study also observed the spatial development of turbulent boundary layer flow and vortex shedding in the trawl wake.
