CFD-DEM based full-scale ship-ice interaction research under FSICR ice condition in restricted brash ice channel

Jianing Zhang et al.

Summary: The CFD-DEM simulations investigated ship-ice contact models and fullscale ship-ice interaction characteristics in a restricted brash ice channel. Results showed convergence of computed ice resistance with different density grids and the importance of ice shape in influencing simulated total ice resistance. The study demonstrated practical value in evaluating ship-brash ice interaction.

An investigation on the speed dependence of ice resistance using an advanced CFD plus DEM approach based on pre-sawn ice tests

Luofeng Huang et al.

Summary: This study developed a computational model to simulate ship advancement in a pre-sawn ice channel. The model was validated with model-scale experiments and found that the relationship between ice resistance and ship speed is more complex than the widely-used assumption of linear change. The findings from this study have implications for improving ship design, operational strategies, and maritime management in polar regions.

Suggestion of Practical Application of Discrete Element Method for Long-Term Wear of Metallic Materials

Sung-Je Lee et al.

Summary: This study presents a numerical analysis procedure using the discrete element method (DEM) to predict wear damage in metallic materials. The results show that wear amount can be efficiently predicted by converting long-term load into an equivalent material constant. However, the inaccuracy of previous numerical models was found to be due to the inability to consider environmental factors and particle behavior.

Dilated-polyhedron-based DEM analysis of the ice resistance on ship hulls in escort operations in level ice

Lu Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigated ice resistance on ships using the discrete element method, employing a dilated polyhedron-based approach to simulate ship-ice interaction and validate results through experiments. Parametric analysis and comparison with existing formulas were conducted to examine the influencing factors and change rules of ice resistance on cargo ships in level ice, with and without icebreaker escort.
