Fuel cell system production cost modeling and analysis

Achim Kampker et al.

Summary: Fuel cell technology is a promising option for reducing global transportation carbon emissions, but the current costs are too high for widespread adoption. Researchers at RWTH Aachen University have developed a cost calculation model for Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) fuel cell systems and are exploring ways to reduce manufacturing costs through economies of scale. The study aims to present the results of cost modeling and identify areas for technical innovations that can lead to cost reductions through economies of scale. The research provides recommendations for strategic investments and highlights the need for further studies to lower costs through economies of scale in PEM fuel cell systems.

Techno-economic analysis of lithium-ion battery price reduction considering carbon footprint based on life cycle assessment

Wei-Hsuan Chen et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively analyzes the carbon footprint, pricing trajectories, and carbon pricing ramifications of lithium-ion batteries. The findings suggest that proper end-of-life treatment can significantly reduce the carbon footprint and that LFP batteries perform best economically. Furthermore, monetizing the battery's carbon footprint can offset price reductions, ensuring the economic and environmental competitiveness of LIBs.

Optimized Configuration of Diesel Engine-Fuel Cell-Battery Hybrid Power Systems in a Platform Supply Vessel to Reduce CO2 Emissions

Giovani T. T. Vieira et al.

Summary: The main objective of this paper is to select the optimal configuration of a ship's power system, considering the use of fuel cells and batteries, that would achieve the lowest CO2 emissions. The ship analyzed in this work is a Platform Supply Vessel (PSV) used to support oil and gas offshore platforms. The proposed solutions include auxiliary generators, batteries, and a proton-exchange membrane fuel cell, and the configurations are classified based on the reduction of CO2 emissions compared to the original system. The most significant reduction achieved is 10.69%.

Design and analysis of liquid hydrogen fuel tank for heavy duty truck

Younseok Choi et al.

Summary: This research analyzes the codes and standards for designing liquid hydrogen fuel tanks for heavy-duty trucks and proposes design principles and procedures. The design guidelines are provided in ISO 13985, and various related standards and codes are examined. The design process consists of material selection, structural analysis for stability, and thermal analysis for assessing the tank's thermal performance. Iterative analysis is required due to the interdependence between structural and thermal analysis. A liquid hydrogen fuel tank for a 540 HP heavy-duty truck was designed using the proposed principles and procedures, and the tank's structural analysis and thermal analysis met the accepted limits established by the codes and standards.
