Fishery Resource Evaluation with Hydroacoustic and Remote Sensing in Yangjiang Coastal Waters in Summer

Xiaoqing Yin et al.

Summary: In this study, the spatial distribution of fish in Yangjiang coastal waters was analyzed using acoustic survey data and remote sensing data. The results showed that fish were mainly small individuals, with a high density nearshore and a low density offshore. In the vertical direction, fish were distributed in the surface-middle layers in shallow waters and in the middle-bottom layers in deeper waters. The study provides scientific foundation and data support for the rational development and protection of fishery resources in Yangjiang coastal waters.

Environment variables affect CPUE and spatial distribution of fishing grounds on the light falling gear fishery in the northwest Indian Ocean at different time scales

Haibin Han et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of different time scales on the catch rate and fishing ground center of gravity in the northwest Indian Ocean from 2016 to 2020. Results showed that the importance of the long time scale (year, week) was greater than that of the short time scale (lunar phase and operation time). The Random Forest and GAM models indicated that sea surface temperature, dissolved oxygen, salinity, and chlorophyll a significantly impact pelagic fishing and catch per unit effort. The RF model had a smaller suitable interval of time, space, and environmental variables compared to the GAM model.

Applying Acoustic Scattering Layer Descriptors to Depict Mid-Trophic Pelagic Organisation: The Case of Atlantic African Large Marine Ecosystems Continental Shelf

Anne Mouget et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of sound scattering layers (SSLs) to identify key nonspecific organizational characteristics of mid-trophic pelagic communities in African Atlantic Large Marine Ecosystems (AALMEs). The results suggest that SSL variables can be used to standardize monitoring of marine ecosystems and capture changes in the spatial structure and function of mid-trophic pelagic marine ecosystems.

Diel vertical migration of mesozooplankton in the northern Yellow Sea

Ruping Ge et al.

Summary: The study found that the formation and disappearance of the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass have significant impacts on the succession of zooplankton communities and their diel vertical migration patterns. Zooplankton populations show distinct variations in different seasons, and the presence of seasonal thermoclines significantly influences the migration patterns of zooplankton.

Relationships between environmental variables and spatial and temporal distribution of jack mackerel (Trachurus japonicus) in the Beibu Gulf, South China Sea

Yuting Feng et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the spatiotemporal distribution of jack mackerel in the Beibu Gulf and identified SLA, month, depth, SSS, and SST as the most crucial factors influencing its variability. The research contributes to a better understanding of the distributional patterns of jack mackerel and provides a basis for sustainable management in the Beibu Gulf.

Warm and Cold Episodes in Western Pacific Warm Pool and Their Linkage With ENSO Asymmetry and Diversity

Hui Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of temperature anomalies over the western Pacific warm pool (WPWP) on the asymmetry and diversity of El Nino-Southern Oscillation, highlighting the different occurrence probabilities and intensities of El Nino events following cold and warm episodes. The findings suggest that the westerlies associated with cold episodes play a crucial role in influencing the sea surface temperature and intensity of El Nino events. Additionally, the study emphasizes the importance of WPWP in modifying the early operational prediction of El Nino intensity and flavors, particularly with a colder WPWP state increasing the probability of EP-type El Nino.

Sound Scattering Layers Within and Beyond the Seychelles-Chagos Thermocline Ridge in the Southwest Indian Ocean

Myounghee Kang et al.

Summary: This study compared the characteristics of sound scattering layers within and beyond the Seychelles-Chagos Thermocline Ridge (SCTR) in the southwest Indian Ocean. It found contrasting oceanographic properties and distribution dynamics of the sound scattering layers between the SCTR and non-SCTR regions. Furthermore, the study revealed differences in zooplankton density between the two regions.

Dense mesopelagic sound scattering layer and vertical segregation of pelagic organisms at the Arctic-Atlantic gateway during the midnight sun

Pierre Priou et al.

Summary: This study reveals the under-ice distribution of epipelagic and mesopelagic organisms at the Arctic-Atlantic gateway in spring, during the midnight sun period. The epipelagic surface scattering layer is primarily composed of copepods in the top 60 meters, while the mesopelagic deep scattering layer consists mainly of fish and extends between 280 meters and 600 meters.

Broadband Characteristics of Zooplankton Sound Scattering Layer in the Kuroshio-Oyashio Confluence Region of the Northwest Pacific Ocean in Summer of 2019

Minghua Xue et al.

Summary: Acoustic technology was used to investigate zooplankton in the Kuroshio-Oyashio confluence region, revealing that zooplankton sound scattering mainly occurs within 0-200 meters. The zooplankton sound scattering layer shows a diel vertical migration behavior and is closely related to solar altitude angle, temperature, and ocean currents.
