Genetic population structures of common scavenging species near hydrothermal vents in the Okinawa Trough

Hiroki Kise et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to clarify the population structures of dominant benthic megafaunal species near hydrothermal vent fields in the Okinawa Trough using a population genetics approach. The results showed strong genetic connectivity and/or large population sizes for the studied species.

The Effect of Zinc Concentration on Physiological, Immunological, and Histological Changes in Crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) as Bio-indicator for Environment Quality Criteria

Samar Mamdouh et al.

Summary: The release of heavy metals into the environment has led to their accumulation in aquatic organisms, with zinc being the most prevalent heavy metal found in water samples. This study observed significant increases in bioaccumulation of zinc in crayfish exposed to high doses, leading to physiological and histological changes. Procambarus clarkii could potentially serve as a sensitive bioindicator for monitoring water quality standards.

Trace Elemental Analysis of the Exoskeleton, Leg Muscle, and Gut of Three Hadal Amphipods

Lingyue Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the trace element bio-accumulation of three hadal amphipods, revealing significant accumulations of various elements in different tissues. Comparisons with non-abyssal and shallow water decapoda and amphipoda species showed that hadal amphipods had higher concentrations of certain trace elements, suggesting potential impacts of food availability and human activities in the hadal environments.

Trimethylamine N-Oxide (TMAO) and Trimethylamine (TMA) Determinations of Two Hadal Amphipods

Qi Liu et al.

Summary: This study detected the TMAO and TMA concentrations in two hadal amphipods from the Mariana Trench and the New Britain Trench. It was found that TMAO concentration was higher in external organs and there was a strong positive correlation between TMAO and TMA concentrations. Evolutionary analysis of the FMO3 gene revealed specific mutation sites in these hadal species. Overall, this study emphasizes the important role of TMAO in the environmental adaptability of hadal amphipods and provides insights into the evolution and protein structure of FMO3.

Assessment of Heavy Metal Concentration in Water, Sediment and Common Fish Species of Dhaleshwari River in Bangladesh and their Health Implications

Evena Parvin Lipy et al.

Summary: This study focused on evaluating the pollution levels in Dhaleshwari River in Bangladesh due to heavy metal discharge from tanneries and other industries, as well as the associated health risks of consuming fish with accumulated heavy metals. The results showed that heavy metal concentrations in water and sediment exceeded WHO and USEPA standards, with seasonal variations observed. Fish organs had high metal concentrations, especially in gills, posing health risks upon consumption.

The Adaptive Evolution and Gigantism Mechanisms of the Hadal Supergiant Amphipod Alicella gigantea

Wenhao Li et al.

Summary: This study conducted whole-body transcriptome analysis on two hadal amphipods, finding that the growth rate of A. gigantea was much faster than B. schellenbergi. Hadal amphipods are subjected to intense food shortage, with response to starvation, glycerolipid metabolism, and meiosis pathways identified as main adaptation strategies. The gigantism mechanisms of A. gigantea might involve seven PSGs related to growth regulation and higher evolutionary rate in the growth regulation gene ontology term compared to small-sized amphipods.

Metagenomic Insights Into the Structure and Function of Intestinal Microbiota of the Hadal Amphipods

Jiulin Chan et al.

Summary: The study found that the intestinal microbiotas of deep-sea amphipods are diverse, with different species having distinct dominant microbial components that enhance survival capabilities through promoting bacterial swimming and nutrient utilization. Additionally, a large quantity of probiotic genera in the gut microbiotas of hadal amphipods indicated potential contributions to host growth and development, facilitating adaptation to extreme environments.
