A study of wave-driven flow characteristics across a reef under the effect of tidal current

Yu Yao et al.

Summary: Recent field observations have contributed to a better understanding of the influence of tidal currents on wave dynamics over coral reefs. This study conducts detailed flow measurements across an idealized reef profile in a wave-current flume to compare the effects of tidal currents on plunging breakers during flooding and ebbing tides. Laboratory measurements of wave height, mean water level, and cross-shore mean current below wave trough are reported. A numerical wave tank is then established to replicate the laboratory measurements, and the resulting mean flow field and cross-shore distribution of turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress are examined through numerical simulations.

Numerical modelling of wave transformation and runup over rough fringing reefs using VARANS equations

Yu Yao et al.

Summary: In this study, a 3D numerical model based on a numerical wave tank was developed to investigate the interaction between waves and coral reef profiles. The model was validated through laboratory experiments and used to analyze the impacts of forcing conditions, reef morphology, and reef roughness on wave transformation and runup. An empirical formula for predicting wave runup was derived from the numerical results. The study also examined the cross-reef variations of energy dissipation, wave spectrum, wave shape parameters, nonlinearity parameter, TKE, and its dissipation rate for both smooth and rough reefs.

Uncertainty of wave runup prediction on coral reef-fringed coasts using SWASH model

Ye Liu et al.

Summary: The study shows that predicting wave runup on reef-fringed coasts is mainly affected by infragravity swash variability. Prior knowledge of the incident wave group structure can help reduce this uncertainty. Increasing the number of spectral components can decrease the uncertainty in wave runup height.

A Numerical Study of Wave-Driven Mean Flows and Setup Dynamics at a Coral Reef-Lagoon System

Dirk P. Rijnsdorp et al.

Summary: The study on the reef-lagoon system at Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia, using the SWASH model, revealed that wave forces primarily drive onshore flows near the reef crest, while bottom stress plays a significant role in wave setup inside the lagoon.
