A bounding surface model of gas-hydrate-bearing sediments

Liang Kong et al.

Summary: Gas hydrates are a promising energy source, but their exploitation in marine geotechnics faces challenges. The dissociation and formation of hydrates can change sediment mechanical properties. A constitutive model is needed for safe gas hydrate exploitation. A bounding surface model is developed based on the modified Cam-clay model, and its validity is demonstrated through simulation and comparison.

Undrained Shear Properties of Shallow Clayey-Silty Sediments in the Shenhu Area of South China Sea

Ruchun Wei et al.

Summary: A series of undrained triaxial shear tests were conducted on shallow clayey-silty sediments in the Shenhu area of the South China Sea (SCS) to investigate their undrained shear properties under different overconsolidation ratio (OCR) conditions. The results showed that the undrained shear strength was proportional to the effective confining pressure for normally consolidated specimens, while it nonlinearly increased with increasing OCRs for OC specimens. A model was proposed to predict the pore pressure coefficient at failure, which successfully predicted the behavior of the sediments with different OCRs.

Experimental investigation on the permeability characteristics of methane hydrate-bearing clayey-silty sediments considering various factors

Yapeng Zhao et al.

Summary: Permeability is a crucial parameter for evaluating hydrate-bearing sediments (HBS) as reservoirs and for developing exploitation plans. However, previous permeability studies of HBS have not taken into account effective stress and seepage pressure difference, which is inconsistent with the actual stress-seepage coupling process in hydrate exploitation. This study conducted water permeability tests on hydrate-bearing clayey-silty sediments (HBCSS) synthesized using marine clay from the South China Sea and quartz sand, in order to investigate the effects of effective stress, hydrate saturation, and seepage pressure difference on permeability. The experimental results show that effective stress significantly decreases permeability, especially at the beginning of stress increase. Furthermore, the relationship between hydrate saturation and permeability follows a negative exponential pattern due to the blockage mechanism of hydrate particles. The change in effective stress is the main factor influencing permeability in response to seepage pressure difference, with the effect weakening as hydrate cementation increases. Based on these findings, permeability models considering the coupling effect of effective stress and hydrate saturation were proposed.

Slope instability of submarine sediments due to hydrate dissociation: A case study of Northern Cascadia Margin.

Sulav Dhakal et al.

Summary: Gas hydrates in continental shelves play a significant role in global methane reservoirs. Environmental changes can lead to hydrate dissociation and release of massive amounts of methane gas into the ocean, posing risks to slope stability. This study uses Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical simulations to assess the risks associated with hydrate dissociation on Northern Cascadia Margin slopes. Results show that depressurization poses a higher risk compared to ocean warming. Additionally, seismic events combined with depleted hydrate bearing sediment can cause significant mass movements.

Dehuan Yang et al.

Summary: A series of compression tests were conducted on artificial methane hydrate-bearing fine-grained sediment (HBFS) specimens. The results showed that the swelling index decreased and the yield stress increased linearly with the increase of hydrate saturation. The presence of hydrate could increase the stiffness and shear strength of the HBFS, depending on the applied confining net stress. The experimental results provided a comprehensive dataset for validating the constitutive models of HBFS.

The results show that increasing hydrate saturation leads to a higher A value during shearing, especially in sand sediments with higher effective confining pressure. However, increasing hydrate saturation reduces A values at failure, with differing effects on sand and clayey-silt sediments.

Characterization of the sediments in a gas hydrate reservoir in the northern South China Sea: Implications for gas hydrate accumulation

Chenyang Bai et al.

Summary: Gas hydrates, a potential major energy resource, are widely found in sub-oceanic sediments and have the potential to play an important role in the future of fuels. This study investigates a gas hydrates reservoir in the South China Sea to understand the controlling factors of gas hydrates accumulation. The results show that fine-grained turbidite sediments characterized by poor sorting and high foraminifera abundance are beneficial to gas hydrate accumulation, while suspended sediments characterized by fine sorting and high calcareous ultra-microfossil abundance are not conducive to gas hydrate accumulation. The study suggests that gas hydrate accumulation in this area is controlled by multiple factors, including sedimentary processes, sorting, biological abundance, mineral composition, and specific surface area.
