Observation of fracture process zone and produced fracture surface roughness in granite under Brazilian splitting tests

Ghasem Shams et al.

Summary: The complexity of the fracture network and the roughness of the generated fractures play a crucial role in determining the hydraulic conductivity of rock masses in rock engineering structures. This study investigated the characteristics of the fracture process zone (FPZ) and the surface roughness of fractures in granite under tension at different loading rates using acoustic emission (AE) and digital image correlation (DIC) techniques. The results showed that the loading rate significantly influenced the extent of the FPZ and the tensile strength of the specimens. Lower loading rates resulted in larger FPZ and higher roughness of the fractures. AE and DIC data were in good agreement, with AE providing slightly wider process zones.

Realization of Paris Agreement pledges may limit warming just below 2 °C

Malte Meinshausen et al.

Summary: Over the past five years, many countries have submitted their new or updated mitigation goals for 2030, with some also making longer-term pledges. A study suggests that if all these pledges are fully implemented and on time, warming can be kept just below 2 degrees Celsius. However, achieving this goal will require urgent and significant emission reductions in this decade, leading to global net-zero CO2 emissions by the mid-century.

The role of renewable energy, fossil fuel consumption, urbanization and economic growth on CO2 emissions in China

Binlin Li et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between renewable energy, fossil fuel consumption, economic growth, urbanization, and CO2 emissions in China from 1990 to 2020. The findings suggest an inverted U-shaped relationship between CO2 emissions and GDP per capita, with fossil fuel consumption increasing CO2 emissions in China. The study also indicates a potential cumulative effect of renewable energy consumption on reducing CO2 emissions.

Experimental and numerical investigation of seepage and heat transfer in rough single fracture for thermal reservoir

Yibin Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the seepage characteristics and heat transfer efficiency in rough fractures using artificial specimens prepared by cement mortar. The presence of proppant and higher specimen temperatures can enhance hydraulic aperture and facilitate seepage in rough fractures. Additionally, high flow rates can extract more heat energy, contributing to thermal breakthrough. Furthermore, the anisotropy of roughness can impact heat transfer efficiency by reducing effective heat transfer area.
