The importance of pigs' castration strategy on carbon footprint of feed intake, nitrogen and phosphorus efficiency under different management conditions

A. Van den Broeke et al.

Summary: The environmental impact of livestock production, particularly meat production, is a concern at both global and local levels. Excess nutrients from livestock excretion can lead to water and soil pollution. The SuSI project evaluated the environmental impact of immunocastration as an alternative to surgical castration and boar production with promising results. Immunocastration showed better performance in terms of carbon footprint, nitrogen and phosphorus excretion, and efficiency compared to surgical castration, although the effects varied across trials. Improving feed efficiency and choosing low-impact ingredients are key factors in enhancing the environmental sustainability of pig production.

Protein retention, growth performance and carcass traits of individually housed immunocastrated male- and female- and surgically castrated male Iberian pigs fed diets of increasing amino acid concentration

P. Palma-Granados et al.

Summary: The study showed that Iberian IC male pigs had significantly higher growth rate, feed efficiency, and nitrogen retention efficiency compared to other groups before the vaccination against GnRH. However, after the second vaccination, differences in performance between sex groups disappeared, with IC males still showing higher overall growth rate and feed efficiency.

Examining Alternatives to Painful Piglet Castration Within the Contexts of Markets and Stakeholders: A Comparison of Four EU Countries

Li Lin-Schilstra et al.

Summary: The practice of painful castration of piglets to avoid boar taint in many European countries has sparked calls for more animal-friendly alternatives. Stakeholders in different countries prefer alternatives based on contextual factors such as the structure, scale, cost, and quality orientation of the production system.
