Open Shells in Endohedral Clusters: Structure and Bonding in the [Fe2@Ge16]4- Anion and Comparison to Isostructural [Co2@Ge16]4-

Harry W. T. Morgan et al.

Summary: The anionic cluster [Fe-2@Ge-16](4-) has been characterized and shown to be isostructural to the known D-2h-symmetric alpha isomer of the cobalt analogue [Co-2@ Ge-16](4-). The results of spin-unrestricted density functional theory (DFT) and multiconfigurational self-consistent field (MC-SCF) calculations demonstrate significant transfer of electron density from the metal to the cage, particularly in the Fe clusters where the exchange stabilization of unpaired spin density is an important driving force.

Study of electronic structure, stabilities and electron localization behavior of AgPbn (n=1-14) nanoclusters: A first principal investigation

Ravi Trivedi et al.

Summary: The present study investigates the electronic structure, stability, and electron localization function (ELF) of endohedrally doped AgPbn clusters using density functional theory. It was found that AgPb10 and AgPb12 are relatively stable species, with electrons tending to localize on the outer side of the cage structure. These clusters may be useful as optical devices in the visible region, with vibrational spectra in the far infrared region.
