Towards a Better Understanding of the Interaction of Fe66Cr10Nb5B19 Metallic Glass with Aluminum: Growth of Intermetallics and Formation of Kirkendall Porosity during Sintering

Dina V. Dudina et al.

Summary: Metallic-glass-reinforced metal matrix composites are a new type of composite materials, in which amorphous alloys act as reinforcement. This study investigated the morphology of the reaction products formed when Fe66Cr10Nb5B19 metallic glass particles interacted with aluminum. The composites were processed using spark plasma sintering, hot pressing, or a combination of both. The reaction products observed included dense layers covering the alloy cores, needles protruding from the shells, and needles and platelets distributed in the aluminum matrix. The role of the liquid phase in the structure formation and the occurrence of pores due to the Kirkendall effect were discussed.

Wear-Resistant Fe-Based Metallic Glass-Al2O3 Composite Coatings Produced by Detonation Spraying

Ivanna D. Kuchumova et al.

Summary: Al2O3 particle-modified Fe66Cr10Nb5B19 metallic glass matrix coatings were deposited on carbon steel substrates using detonation spraying. The microstructure, mechanical and tribological properties of the coatings were investigated. It was found that the friction coefficients of the coatings were similar and the specific wear rate was reduced compared to stainless steel.

Summary: This paper presents the investigation results of copper-tungsten coatings with different compositions on aluminum alloy substrates. It was found that increasing tungsten content in the coatings improves their microhardness and Young's modulus, as well as bonding strength. Cu-W coatings show better wear resistance compared to pure copper coatings under dry sliding wear conditions.

Interaction between Fe66Cr10Nb5B19 metallic glass and aluminum during spark plasma sintering

Dina V. Dudina et al.

Summary: In this study, the interaction between Fe66Cr10Nb5B19 metallic glass and aluminum during spark plasma sintering (SPS) was investigated, revealing the formation of reaction layers around the Fe-based cores. The Vickers hardness of composites increased with higher sintering temperatures due to the formation of thicker reaction layers at the interface. Comparison with traditional sintering methods suggests that interfacial resistance may play a crucial role in influencing reaction advancement and formation of intermetallics in metal matrix composites.

Cold spray deformation and deposition of blended feedstock powders not necessarily obey the rule of mixture

Roghayeh Nikbakht et al.

Summary: The study aims to explore the process-structure relation of mixed Ni-Ti powders in cold spray to achieve a coating with the composition of interest. Experiments and modeling showed that mixed powders experience higher degree of deformation during impact, resulting in finer grain sizes, particularly for Ti in composite coatings with an average grain size of 500 nm.
