Summary: Liver abscesses (LAs) are common in cattle and can be attributed to diets high in rapidly fermentable starch. The inclusion of antibiotics reduces the occurrence of LAs. Bacteroidetes were found to be the dominant taxa in LA microbial communities, with low proportions of Fusobacteria. Some Bacteroidetes-dominated abscess communities may originate from other parts of the bovine gut.

Adaptive Responses of Thyroid Hormones, Insulin, and Glucose during Pregnancy and Lactation in Dairy Cows

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different stages of pregnancy and lactation on thyroid, insulin, and glucose responses in dairy cows. The results showed that pregnant cows had higher levels of thyroxine and insulin compared to nonpregnant cows and cows at >60-120 days of pregnancy. Along the lactation phase, thyroxine levels initially decreased, reached the lowest values at >60-120 days, and then increased until the end of lactation. Glucose concentrations were highest during the first 120 days of lactation and lowest at the end. Monitoring these hormone and glucose changes is important for evaluating the metabolic adaptation in dairy cows during different functional periods.

Summary: Liver abscesses in feedlot cattle are polymicrobial infections, primarily caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum. This study used 16S ribosomal RNA amplicon sequence analyses to identify bacterial composition in liver abscesses, finding a dominance of Gram-negative bacteria and Fusobacterium followed by Pseudomonas. Differences in bacterial community composition were not observed between crossbred and Holstein steers fed finishing diets with or without tylosin.

Early life dietary intervention in dairy calves results in a long-term reduction in methane emissions

Summary: Recent evidence suggests that dietary manipulation from birth affects growth, methane production, and gastrointestinal microbial ecology in calves. Administration of 3-NOP to calves from birth resulted in a persistent reduction in methane emissions post-weaning, indicating a potential differentiation of the ruminal microbial ecosystem. Despite variations in microbial abundance, the treatment had a lasting impact on methane production, possibly due to changes in the host response triggered by the treatment.
