The effect of puppyhood and adolescent diet on the incidence of chronic enteropathy in dogs later in life

Summary: Diet plays a crucial role in maintaining the stability of the gut microenvironment, affecting the microbiome, gut barrier, immune system, and gut function. However, there is limited knowledge about the impact of early diet on the development of inflammatory gastrointestinal disorders later in life, especially in dogs. This study aimed to investigate the associations between early life diet and the incidence of chronic enteropathy (CE) in companion dogs. The findings showed that feeding a non-processed meat-based diet and giving human meal leftovers and table scraps during puppyhood and adolescence were protective against CE, while an ultra-processed carbohydrate-based diet and rawhides during puppyhood were significant risk factors for CE.
