Selective dry cow therapy effect on milk yield and somatic cell count: A retrospective cohort study

R. E. Niemi et al.

Summary: A study compared milk yield and somatic cell count between cows receiving antibiotic dry cow therapy (aDCT) and those that did not in herds using selective aDCT. Results showed that cows treated with aDCT had lower SCC before drying off, lower postcalving SCC, and higher milk yield compared to untreated cows.

Prudent Use of Antibiotics in Dairy Cows: The Nordic Approach to Udder Health

Paivi Rajala-Schultz et al.

Summary: Dairy production in the Nordic countries has a low consumption of antibiotics, but maintains high levels of animal health, productivity, and milk quality. Their strategies for mastitis control and treatment can serve as a model for prudent antibiotic use in cattle herds in other countries and regions.

Antimicrobial resistance and virulence characteristics in 3 collections of staphylococci from bovine milk samples

M. E. Fergestad et al.

Summary: This study identified and characterized 272 staphylococcal isolates from bovine milk samples collected in Norway and Belgium in 2016, focusing on antimicrobial resistance and carriage of virulence genes, particularly methicillin resistance. The results showed common antimicrobial resistance in Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus haemolyticus, with Staph. aureus carrying a variety of virulence genes. Resistance to trimethoprim-sulfonamide was frequent in all groups, with penicillin resistance most commonly observed in one group. Additionally, methicillin resistance was found in both Staph. aureus and non-aureus staphylococci from Belgian isolates.
