Social Licence to Operate: What Can Equestrian Sports Learn from Other Industries?

Janet Douglas et al.

Summary: The concept of 'social licence to operate' (SLO) is an intangible agreement between the public and an industry/group, which allows certain activities to proceed with minimal restrictions. In the case of equestrianism, maintaining the SLO requires an ethical approach to equine welfare and earning the trust of stakeholders, including the public. Transparency, shared values, and competence are crucial in establishing and maintaining this trust. The effort and investment in maintaining the SLO should be seen as crucial for the future of the sport.

Activity Time Budgets-A Potential Tool to Monitor Equine Welfare?

Ulrike Auer et al.

Summary: Horses' behavior, as indicated by their time budgets for specific activities, can serve as an important indicator of their welfare status. Variations in time budgets between studies are largely attributed to differences in age and environmental conditions. Management interventions in domesticated horses can lead to time budgets similar to semi-feral horses, highlighting the significance of environmental conditions in monitoring horses' welfare.

Bit-Related Lesions in Event Horses After a Cross-Country Test

Kati Tuomola et al.

Summary: The study looked at the prevalence of oral lesions and their risk factors in Finnish event horses. Thin and thick bits, as well as being a mare, were found to be risk factors for mouth lesions. Ponies had a smaller risk for lesions compared to other horse breeds. Monitoring the bit area and considering these risk factors is important for horse welfare.

Basic Needs in Horses?-A Literature Review

Konstanze Krueger et al.

Summary: This study translated and reviewed literature on the basic needs of horses, analyzing 38 studies. The findings suggest that horses react to restrictions on social contact, free movement, and access to roughage, especially when these needs are restricted in combination. Passive responses and abnormal behavior serve as clear indicators of suffering in horses under limitations.
