Summary: This study found that dogs with higher RDW values upon hospital admission have greater odds of all-cause in-hospital mortality compared to dogs with lower RDW; while a similar association between RDW and mortality was not found in cats. Further research is needed to evaluate the utility of this biomarker for specific diseases in dogs and to better understand the mechanisms driving the association between increased RDW and mortality in canine patients.

Complete Blood Counts and Blood Smear Analyses in 312 Diabetic Dogs (2007-2017)

Summary: Diabetes mellitus in dogs is associated with hematologic abnormalities, including high-grade codocytosis and anisocytosis. This study found that diabetic dogs with high-grade codocytosis had lower red blood cell counts and higher white blood cell counts, and were more likely to be diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis. Blood smear analysis should be routinely performed in the evaluation of diabetic dogs.

Detection of Anti-Erythrocyte Antibodies in Dogs with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the presence of anti-RBC antibodies and potential red blood cell abnormalities in dogs with chronic intestinal inflammation (IBD). Results showed that a high percentage of dogs with IBD had anti-RBC antibodies present, suggesting possible subclinical chronic immune-mediated hemolysis. Additional findings of red blood cell regeneration were also observed in some dogs, indicating potential hemolytic processes at play in canine IBD.
