Voluntary heat stress abatement system for dairy cows: Does it mitigate the effects of heat stress on physiology and behavior?

L. N. Grinter et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the effects of mandatory soakings and voluntary soaking system on dairy cows, and assess the heat abatement capability. It also examines the individual use of the voluntary heat abatement system and its relationship with temperature-humidity index (THI), as well as the physiological, behavioral, and milk production differences between soaking treatments.

Methods for detecting heat stress in hutch-housed dairy calves in a continental climate

B. Dado-Senn et al.

Summary: Dairy calves exposed to solar radiation, elevated ambient temperature, and humidity are at risk of impaired welfare and productivity. This study aims to determine the associations between animal-based and environmental heat stress indicators and establish environmental breakpoints for hutch-raised dairy calves during a continental summer. The results indicate that dry bulb temperature is an appropriate measurement to detect thermal discomfort for calves in a temperate summer climate and individual hutch housing.

Effects of Heat Stress in Dairy Cows Raised in the Confined System: A Scientometric Review

Karen Dal' Magro Frigeri et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a significant increase in studies on the effect of thermal stress on lactating cows. Feedlot systems for dairy cows have become popular worldwide. This article conducts a scientometric analysis to evaluate research on thermal stress in lactating cows housed in different barn systems. The data from 604 research studies obtained from the Web of Science database was analyzed using CiteSpace software. The results highlight the most used keywords, relevant countries, authors, institutions, and research networks in this field.

Effects of supplementation of sodium acetate on rumen fermentation and microbiota in postpartum dairy cows

Zhiqiang Cheng et al.

Summary: Supplementing post-partum cows with sodium acetate (NAc) can improve rumen fermentation and increase the concentrations of volatile fatty acids such as acetic and propionic acids. Administration of NAc affects the abundance of rumen bacterial communities, upregulating the relative abundance of Prevotella while downregulating the relative abundance of RF39 and Clostridia_UCG_014.

Common and Differential Dynamics of the Function of Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells between Holstein and Jersey Cows in Heat-Stress Environment

Eun Tae Kim et al.

Summary: Seasonal changes, particularly transitioning to hot and humid conditions, have a negative impact on dairy cows affecting productivity, reproduction, metabolism, and immunity. This study aimed to investigate the gene expression changes and immune pathways of Holstein and Jersey cows under different environmental conditions. Results showed common and breed-specific immune shifts in response to temperature and humidity variations, enhancing our understanding of how seasonal changes impact dairy cow immunity.

Thermoregulatory responses in riverine buffaloes against heat stress: An updated review

S. R. Mishra

Summary: Buffaloes in tropics and subtropics, including India, are at risk of heat stress which can impact their productivity. As homeotherms, buffaloes display various thermoregulatory responses to combat heat stress, with a key role played by heat shock proteins in conferring thermotolerance.

Invited review: The influence of immune activation on transition cow health and performance-A critical evaluation of traditional dogmas

E. A. Horst et al.

Summary: The transition from gestation to lactation in cows is accompanied by significant physiological, metabolic, and inflammatory changes, with the success of this period impacting the entire lactation cycle and potential future lactations. Despite traditional beliefs about the role of adipose tissue mobilization and hypocalcemia in transition period success, recent research suggests that immune activation and inflammation play a crucial role in the adaptive process. The utilization of glucose by the immune system leading to increased NEFA and ketones, coupled with the impact on hypocalcemia, may explain the relationship between immune activation and poor health, production, and reproduction outcomes in dairy cows.

Behavioural, physiological, neuro-endocrine and molecular responses of cattle against heat stress: an updated review

S. R. Mishra

Summary: Heat stress has a significant negative impact on cattle growth, development, reproduction, and production worldwide, with tropical and sub-tropical countries being most affected. Cattle exhibit various thermoregulatory responses, including behavioral, physiological, neuro-endocrine, and molecular responses, to combat the deleterious effects of heat stress. Among these responses, behavioral, physiological, and neuro-endocrine responses are considered the most conventional and expedient.
