Early hearing detection and intervention (EHDI) programmes for infants and young children in low-income and middle-income countries in Asia: a systematic review

Summary: This systematic review analyzed the models of early hearing detection and intervention (EHDI) used in Asian low-income and middle-income countries (L&MICs). The study found that two-stage objective otoacoustic emission or automated auditory brainstem response screening was predominantly used for newborn and infant screening, while single-stage pure tone audiometry screening was used for screening older children. However, there was a lack of uniform protocols within each country, and limited information on long-term viability and cost-benefit of EHDI programs.

Outcomes of infants born to pregnant women with syphilis: a nationwide study in Korea

Summary: Despite the expansion of antenatal syphilis screening programs, congenital syphilis (CS) remains a concern. This study analyzed the manifestation and progress of CS, including treatment and follow-up, based on a nationwide study. Complications such as jaundice, hearing impairment, renal disease, and mental retardation were common in infants with CS, with neurosyphilis significantly associated with complications.

Universal newborn hearing screening program and perinatal and congenital infections in neonates attended in South Brazil

Summary: This study investigated neonates with perinatal/congenital infections (PCI) receiving care at a university hospital's Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UNHS) program. Analysis of records from 2017 to 2019 showed syphilis was the most prevalent infection (67.7%), followed by HIV (20.1%), with a significant association between these infections and older mothers (p < 0.035).
