Global burden and trends of sexually transmitted infections from 1990 to 2019: an observational trend study

Yang Zheng et al.

Summary: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a global public health issue, but there is limited research on their burden and trends. According to this study, although most countries have seen a decrease in STIs incidence rates and DALYs, the absolute number of cases and DALYs has increased from 1990 to 2019. STIs continue to be a global public health challenge, especially in sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America.

Respondent-driven sampling: Advantages and disadvantages from a sampling method

Maria S. Navarrete et al.

Summary: This article summarizes the main elements, advantages, and disadvantages of Respondent-driven Sampling (RDS). It points out criticisms regarding the feasibility of assumptions, estimators, and variances. The article also comments on problems in the quality of reports. RDS is important for defining health program priorities and policies, but there is potential for bias and limited evidence on the representativeness of results. Improvement of the methodology is still ongoing, and verification of assumptions and report quality is crucial for confidence in RDS results.

Effectiveness of Respondent-Driven Sampling for Conducting Health Studies Among Undocumented Immigrants at a Time of Heightened Immigration Enforcement

Luz M. Garcini et al.

Summary: This paper assessed the effectiveness of Respondent Driven Sampling (RDS) in recruiting undocumented Latinx immigrants for a prevalence health study. RDS was successful in collecting data from 254 participants and inferring to a population of 22,000. Factors contributing to effective recruitment included location, flexibility, on-site childcare, and detailed explanation of the recruitment process.

Trends in health and disability in Botswana. An analysis of the global burden of disease study

Jill Hanass-Hancock et al.

Summary: Globally, years of life lost are declining while years lived with disability are increasing. High socio-demographic index countries have started adjusting rehabilitation services to the overall ageing population, while the situation in low- and middle-income countries is less well understood. Better assessment of the situation is needed to prepare health systems to accommodate the increased need for disability support and rehabilitation services.

Sexually transmitted infections and factors associated with risky sexual practices among female sex workers: A cross sectional study in a large Andean city

Luz Marina Llangari-Arizo et al.

Summary: Limited data is available on risky sexual practices affecting sexually transmitted infections among female sex workers in Ecuador. Factors such as age, membership in an FSW association, and self-reported previous STI diagnosis were associated with engaging in risky sexual practices. Among this population of sex workers, increasing age and belonging to an FSW association were linked to a higher likelihood of risky sexual behavior with clients, highlighting the importance of engaging with FSW organizations to reduce the burden of STIs.

A New Regression Model for the Analysis of Overdispersed and Zero-Modified Count Data

Wesley Bertoli et al.

Summary: This paper aims to propose a fixed-effects regression model based on the hurdle version of the Poisson-Sujatha distribution to address zero modification and overdispersion in count datasets. The study evaluates the empirical properties of Bayesian estimators through intensive Monte Carlo simulation and analyzes the performance on a real dataset.

Determinants and consequences of heavy episodic drinking among female sex workers in Ethiopia: A respondent-driven sampling study

Minilik Demissie Amogne et al.

Summary: The study found that among FSWs in major towns in Ethiopia, 66% consume alcohol and 29.1% have heavy episodic drinking. FSWs working in bars/hotels and local drinking houses have higher odds of heavy episodic drinking compared to street-based FSWs. FSWs who started selling sex at a younger age and those who were forced into selling sex are also more likely to engage in heavy episodic drinking.

Seroprevalence and Associated Factors of Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Treponema pallidum, Hepatitis B Virus, and Hepatitis C Virus among Female Sex Workers in Dessie City, Northeast Ethiopia

Yeshi Metaferia et al.

Summary: The study examined the seroprevalence and associated factors of HIV, HBV, HCV, and T. pallidum among female sex workers in Dessie City, Northeast Ethiopia. The prevalence of any STI, HIV, HBV, and T. pallidum was found to be relatively high, indicating a need for preventive measures and appropriate treatment. Collaborative efforts should be made to address the issue through counseling and job placement in other sectors.

Too many zeros and/or highly skewed? A tutorial on modelling health behaviour as count data with Poisson and negative binomial regression

James A. Green

Summary: This paper demonstrates the application of count distribution models to health psychology data, showing better fit compared to traditional regression/linear models, especially for data with a large number of zeros and extreme values. The negative binomial distribution was found to be the best fit for overdispersed data, while both negative binomial and zero-inflated negative binomial models were suitable for data with abundant zeros.
