Summary: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a global public health issue, but there is limited research on their burden and trends. According to this study, although most countries have seen a decrease in STIs incidence rates and DALYs, the absolute number of cases and DALYs has increased from 1990 to 2019. STIs continue to be a global public health challenge, especially in sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America.

Summary: Limited data is available on risky sexual practices affecting sexually transmitted infections among female sex workers in Ecuador. Factors such as age, membership in an FSW association, and self-reported previous STI diagnosis were associated with engaging in risky sexual practices. Among this population of sex workers, increasing age and belonging to an FSW association were linked to a higher likelihood of risky sexual behavior with clients, highlighting the importance of engaging with FSW organizations to reduce the burden of STIs.

Determinants and consequences of heavy episodic drinking among female sex workers in Ethiopia: A respondent-driven sampling study

Summary: The study found that among FSWs in major towns in Ethiopia, 66% consume alcohol and 29.1% have heavy episodic drinking. FSWs working in bars/hotels and local drinking houses have higher odds of heavy episodic drinking compared to street-based FSWs. FSWs who started selling sex at a younger age and those who were forced into selling sex are also more likely to engage in heavy episodic drinking.

The prevalence of any STI, HIV, HBV, and T. pallidum was found to be relatively high, indicating a need for preventive measures and appropriate treatment. Collaborative efforts should be made to address the issue through counseling and job placement in other sectors.

Too many zeros and/or highly skewed? A tutorial on modelling health behaviour as count data with Poisson and negative binomial regression

Summary: This paper demonstrates the application of count distribution models to health psychology data, showing better fit compared to traditional regression/linear models, especially for data with a large number of zeros and extreme values. The negative binomial distribution was found to be the best fit for overdispersed data, while both negative binomial and zero-inflated negative binomial models were suitable for data with abundant zeros.
