Unified Damage Constitutive Model for Fiber-Reinforced Concrete at High Temperature

Yao Yao et al.

Summary: The mechanical behavior of fiber-reinforced concrete at high temperature was studied, and a constitutive model considering damage effect was developed based on thermodynamic theory. The hardening function and yield theory of concrete at different temperatures were proposed by comparing experimental results of steel fiber-reinforced concrete. Meanwhile, a damage evolution model for concrete matrix at high temperature was developed by incorporating the free energy function. The influence of fibers on concrete strength was investigated at different temperatures, and a parameter considering the deterioration of fiber properties at high temperature was introduced based on experimental observations. The theoretical predictions of the developed model were compared with experimental data, showing reasonable accuracy.

Discrete element modeling of rock-concrete bi-material discs under dynamic tensile loading

Lu Wang et al.

Summary: This study conducted numerical simulations using the discrete element method (DEM) to investigate the failure mechanism and mechanical properties of rock-concrete bi-materials. The results showed that the nominal tensile strength depended on the rock type, with intact specimens having a higher loading capacity than hollow specimens. Different failure modes were observed in intact limestone-concrete bi-materials based on the interface angle, while the inclination angle had minimal effect on the failure pattern of sandstone-concrete bi-materials.

Mechanical properties and bond stress-slip behaviour of fly ash geopolymer concrete

Hamdi Abdulrahman et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the influence of the alkaline-activator to binder ratio, hardened properties, and bond performance on fly ash geopolymer concrete. The results show that reducing the alkaline-activator to binder ratio increases both compressive and splitting tensile strength. Additionally, the bond performance is affected by compressive strength and the concrete cover-to-bar diameter ratio.

An interfacial damage-plastic model for the simulation of masonry structures under monotonic and cyclic loadings

Yu Nie et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a damage plasticity based interface constitutive model for simulating complex mixed behavior of masonry joints. A novel modeling strategy is adopted to algorithmically decouple the damage and plastic deformations, resulting in improved computational efficiency and robustness. The model demonstrates good performance in terms of accuracy and robustness, as validated through experiments, and the effects of different parameters on the model performance are investigated.

A 2D generic multi-surface cohesive zone model for simulating FRP-to-concrete mixed-mode debonding failure

Yu Nie et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a 2D generic multi-surface cohesive zone model to simulate the debonding failure process of FRP-to-concrete joints within the framework of plasticity theory. The accuracy of the model has been validated by comparing the predicted results with test counterparts from literature, demonstrating its capability in capturing mixed-mode failure, dilation behaviour, lateral compression effect, FRP deformation, and local bond stress-slip relationship.

Interface bond between FRP systems and substrate: Analytical modeling

Francesco Ascione et al.

Summary: Steel reinforced polymers (SRP) systems have shown great potential in improving the performance of existing reinforced concrete structures as a competitive alternative to carbon and glass fiber reinforced polymer composites. This paper presents an analytical investigation on the bond behavior between SRP and concrete, deriving closed form solutions to predict the entire debonding propagation process. The study also provides analytical estimates of the SRP effective bonded length and relationships for calculating the maximum axial stress at SRP laminate debonding, verifying the accuracy of the proposed modeling through comparisons with experimental results.

Summary: This study evaluates the effect of Nano-SiO2 and multi-walled carbon nanotubes on the interfacial tensile and shear strengths of recycled aggregate concrete. Results showed that the addition of Nano-SiO2 and carbon nanotubes can improve the interfacial strengths, with carbon nanotubes being more effective. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed that the strength improvement was due to various effects of Nano-SiO2 and carbon nanotubes.

An experimental study on the fatigue failure of steel fibre reinforced concrete at a single fibre level

H. Fataar et al.

Summary: Experimental fatigue tests were conducted on pre-slipped, hooked-end steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC) at a single fibre level. The results showed that as the load level and pre-slip increased, fiber rupture and fiber pull-out became common failure mechanisms, with fiber pull-out being the dominant mechanism at the highest load level and pre-slip. Additionally, X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) scans were used to validate the pre-slip levels and failure mechanisms of the tested specimens.

Summary: This study investigates the complex bond interaction between reinforcement and concrete, focusing on the bond strength of bars embedded in high-performance cementitious materials. It is found that the use of fiber reinforcement enhances bond strength significantly, while internal confinement in high-performance concrete contributes to more effective utilization of standard steel reinforcing bars.
