Striking impacts of biomass burning on PM2.5 concentrations in Northeast China through the emission inventory improvement

Lijiao Chen et al.

Summary: Biomass burning has significant impacts on air quality and climate, particularly in areas with agricultural burning. However, the uncertainties in biomass burning emissions, especially in agricultural burning, limit our understanding of their effects on air quality. By using an improved emission inventory and satellite data, this study evaluates the impact of biomass burning on air quality and climate in Northeast China and finds that biomass burning contributes significantly to PM2.5 concentrations in the region. The study also highlights the importance of small fires, often missed in traditional satellite products, in affecting air quality.

Jian Wu et al.

Summary: This study measured the emission factors of corncob burning and estimated its emissions through field surveys and simulation. It found that corncob burning in China produces significant emissions, which have been underestimated in previous studies that did not consider corncob burning. These findings highlight the importance of corncob burning in biomass burning and can help improve future estimation and modeling of biomass burning emissions.

Co-hydrothermal carbonization of lignocellulose biomass and polyvinyl chloride: The migration and transformation of chlorine

Yixian Xue et al.

Summary: Co-hydrothermal carbonization is an effective method to remove organic-Cl in PVC, but the behavior of Cl redistribution and transformation during the reaction is still unclear. This study investigates the mechanism of Cl migration during the co-HTC reaction of lignocellulosic biomass and PVC. The results show that the Cl in the solid-phase product is converted to HCl as the reaction proceeds, and there is organic-Cl formed from the reaction of incompletely dechlorinated PVC with soluble lignin.

Investigation of Indoor Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Rural Northeast China: Pollution Characteristics, Source Analysis, and Health Assessment

Li Bai et al.

Summary: In rural Northeast China, winter heating using biomass fuels leads to increased concentrations of PAHs indoors, posing a carcinogenic risk to the health of the rural population. The main sources of indoor PAHs include mixed combustion of biomass and coal, motor vehicle emissions, and domestic waste combustion. Improved understanding of the pollution characteristics and sources of indoor PAHs is crucial for enhancing rural indoor air quality in the region.
