An explanatory parametric model to predict comprehensive post-commissioning building performances

Peixian Li et al.

Summary: This paper introduces PECCO, a parametric mathematical model enriched with years of commissioning engineering experience to predict comprehensive EBCx outcomes for various types of public buildings. PECCO collects building parameters through a questionnaire and predicts commissioning outcomes including energy-saving potential, cost saving, asset value increase, and comfort improvement potential. The case studies show that PECCO's predictions are accurate.

Life cycle analysis of GHG emissions from the building retrofitting: The case of a Norwegian office building

Mehrdad Rabani et al.

Summary: This paper conducted a life cycle assessment (LCA) on different building retrofitting scenarios for a typical office building in Norway, finding that net total emissions could be reduced up to 52% through retrofit measures. The study compared emissions from operational energy use in reference and optimized building energy models, showing that operational energy use accounted for 77% in the reference case and 43-46% in retrofitting scenarios. The most embodied stages of emissions in the retrofitting process were found to be the product stage, transport to construction site, and end-of-life service.

Life cycle GHG assessment of a building restoration: Case study of a heritage industrial building in Toronto, Canada

Tamar Opher et al.

Summary: The refurbished Don Valley Brick Works' Kiln Building in Toronto, now the TD Future Cities Centre, aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions through various strategies including materials reuse, lower-carbon material selection, renewable energy systems, natural lighting, improved thermal insulation, and a carbon offset strategy. A life cycle assessment was completed by the project team, providing insights and recommendations for similar projects in the future.

Material Passports for the end-of-life stage of buildings: Challenges and potentials

Meliha Honic et al.

Summary: The article discusses important issues such as the increasing global consumption of non-renewable resources, shortages of primary raw materials, and reduction of space for waste disposal, as well as the EU's concern about unsustainable treatment of resources and the development of strategies to maximize recycling rates. The Material Passport method is used to assess the recycling potential and environmental impact of materials in buildings, with a focus on the end-of-life stage. Three acquisition methods were applied to evaluate material composition and geometrical information, leading to the generation of a BIM-Model for mapping recycling grades and generating Material Passports for specific building elements.
