Description of anisotropic material response of wire and arc additively manufactured thin-walled stainless steel elements

Nicolas Hadjipantelis et al.

Summary: Compared to conventionally-produced structural steel and stainless steel elements, wire and arc additively manufactured (WAAM) elements exhibit a strongly anisotropic material response. Tensile tests on WAAM stainless steel sheets were conducted to investigate this behavior. The results showed that the mechanical response in the elastic range can be accurately described using an orthotropic plane stress material model, and the anisotropy in the inelastic range can be captured through the Hill yield criterion.

Summary: Additive manufacturing (AM) is increasingly important in the production of complex steel structures. Robot-guided wire and arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is suitable for this purpose. A small footbridge was additively manufactured on site using a welding robot, posing challenges for cantilevered manufacturing. This paper discusses the strength studies, manufacturing strategy, and deposition rate findings of this project.

Wire arc additive manufacturing of functionally graded material with SS 316L and IN625: Microstructural and mechanical perspectives

R. Sasikumar et al.

Summary: In this study, functionally graded material (FGM) of Austenitic Stainless Steel and Nickel based superalloy was manufactured using Gas Metal Arc Welding based Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing. The FGM exhibited a well-formed structure without defects and solidification cracking. The microstructural features at the interface showed a sharp transition and a discontinuous dendritic structure. The energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy examination confirmed the dissolution of elements at the interface without significant composition difference. Electron Backscatter Diffraction maps revealed columnar grains and smooth crystallographic growth at the interface. The microstructure of the FGM was mainly austenitic with a lower fraction of ferrite in the stainless steel layers and precipitates in the superalloy layers. The mechanical properties of the FGM were comparable to wrought materials. The study highlights the potential of Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing for fabricating FGM with desired properties.

On the influence of the geometrical irregularities in the mechanical response of Wire-and-Arc Additively Manufactured planar elements

Vittoria Laghi et al.

Summary: The use of Additive Manufacturing technologies in the construction industry is still in its early stages, with Wire-and-Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) process being considered the most suitable for large-scale steel structures. Limited knowledge of the mechanical response of WAAM-produced alloys requires further experimental work. Research shows that the geometrical irregularities resulting from the WAAM process may have significant effects on the mechanical behavior of materials.

Influence of Interlayer Forced Air Cooling on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Wire Arc Additively Manufactured 304L Austenitic Stainless Steel

Lavinia Tonelli et al.

Summary: The study compared the microstructural features and mechanical properties of WAAM-produced plates of austenitic AISI 304 L with and without active interlayer air cooling. It was found that the cooling conditions did not significantly impact the microstructure and mechanical properties of WAAM plates; instead, the anisotropy induced by the additive process had a more pronounced effect on the properties.
