Modelling and optimization of domestic thermal energy storage based heat pump system for geothermal district heating

Oguz Arslan et al.

Summary: A new residential heat pump system was designed for domestic use in the geothermal district heating system. The system integrated a heat pump into the substations of the residences, using a thermal energy storage unit instead of a conventional evaporator. Various systems were analyzed thermodynamically, and the most suitable system was determined through a multi-criteria decision-making analysis. The results showed that the designed system had a favorable NPV value, exergy efficiency, and CO2 reduction.

Dynamic optimization for minimal HVAC demand with latent heat storage, heat recovery, natural ventilation, and solar shadings

Luigi Antonio de Araujo Passos et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes, evaluates, and optimizes a novel HVAC system installed at The Green Village in Delft, the Netherlands. The system consists of all-glass facades with solar shades, sky windows, a climate tower with PCM, a heat recovery unit, and a heat pump. The study uses transient modeling to predict system behavior and constrained nonlinear optimization to select optimal design parameters and operational conditions. The goal is to operate the system as a passive energy system with minimal active power usage. The results show that the optimization reduces heat demand by 10.6% and the optimized system can supply 58% of the annual thermal demand passively, qualifying it as a low-energy building.

Energy, exergy, exergoeconomic and exergoenvironmental analysis on a novel parallel double-effect absorption power cycle driven by the geothermal resource

Feng Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel parallel double-effect absorption power cycle using lithium bromide-water solution to make better use of geothermal energy. The comprehensive energy, exergy, exergoeconomic and exergoenvironmental models of this system are developed, and comparative studies on the performance of this system and traditional absorption power cycle are conducted. The results show that the proposed system can enhance net power output, exergy efficiency, and reduce cost, with slight increase in environmental impact. The absorber and low-temperature generator are identified as the components with highest exergy destruction and loss rate. Improving the performance of the proposed system can be achieved by adjusting certain operation conditions.

A geometrical optimization and comparison study on the charging and discharging performance of shell-and-tube thermal energy storage systems

Mohammad Reza Mohaghegh et al.

Summary: Shell-and-tube latent heat thermal energy storage systems have high thermal/cold storage capacity and wide range of applications. This research investigates the impact of shell design on the thermal performance of vertical ST-LHTES systems during charging and discharging processes and finds that increasing the lateral slope enhances the melting process in charging while decreasing the slope improves thermal performance in discharging. Optimum designs increase system performance by 52% and 56% for charging and discharging processes, respectively.
