The very early-age behaviour of Ultra-High Performance Concrete containing ground granulated blast furnace slag

Soufien Moula et al.

Summary: This paper discusses an innovative approach for developing a more sustainable Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) using ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS). Partially replacing ordinary Portland cement (OPC) with GGBS improves workability, promotes cement hydration, and accelerates setting. Finer GGBS particles result in a greater acceleration of setting and hydration. A more sustainable UHPC with reduced shrinkage has been successfully produced by incorporating a high level of superfine slag.

Effect of grounded blast furnace slag and rice husk ash on performance of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) subjected to impact loading

Ngoc San Ha et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of using alternative cementitious constituents on the compressive performance of Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) under static and dynamic conditions. The results show that the proposed UHPC mixes with alternative constituents have comparable performance to the reference mix. Moreover, the compressive strength of the alternative mixes is not strain rate sensitive and they have lower embedded CO2 emissions.

Towards global indicator of durability performance and carbon footprint of clinker-slag-limestone cement-based concrete exposed to carbonation

Imane Elkhaldi et al.

Summary: This article aims to define an effective global warming potential criterion by calculating CO2 emissions and conducting durability performance tests for qualifying concrete mixtures. It also aims to understand the parameters that influence the duration of corrosion initiation and propagation in concretes exposed to carbonation-induced corrosion. An experimental study was conducted to assess carbonation resistance and electrical resistivity of concretes made with multi-composite cements and to understand the relationship between these properties and cement composition. The presented model allows prediction of the service life of the concrete cover based on material data, environmental parameters, and minimum cover. It was found that the reactive CaO content of cements influences the carbonation rate of concrete, and there is a correlation between electrical resistivity and GGBS (ground-granulated blast furnace slag) content. The model can be used to compare the studied cements based on CO2 emission/service life ratios.

New development of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC)

Jiang Du et al.

Summary: Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) has superior workability, mechanical properties, and durability compared with conventional concrete, but faces challenges like autogenous shrinkage and insufficient flexural/tensile properties. Research on state-of-the-art technologies for optimizing UHPC mixtures can advance its application and further research.

Design of binder system of eco-efficient UHPC based on physical packing and chemical effect optimization

Ye Shi et al.

Summary: This research presents an innovative design approach of binder system for eco-efficient UHPC to achieve a densely compacted hardened paste by optimizing the physical packing and chemical effect of binder system. The influences of binder system composition on the compressive and environment impact of UHPC under different curing regime were studied. The results show that the initial packing density and CaO/SiO2 ratio of the binder system have remarkable impact on the environmental impact and mechanical performance of UHPC.

Development of ECO-UHPC with very-low-C3A cement and ground granulated blast-furnace slag

Tanvir Ahmed et al.

Summary: This study explores the feasibility of high-volume incorporation of GGBS in UHPC with very-low-C(3)A cement as primary binder. Replacing 60% of cement with GGBS can reduce the strength of UHPC, but still achieve ultra-high strength without special curing or fibers. Replacing cement with GGBS can improve the water absorption, corrosion risk, and carbonation resistance of UHPC.

Microstructural investigation of slag-blended UHPC: The effects of slag content and chemical/thermal activation

Omar M. Abdulkareem et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the microstructural characteristics of ultra-high performance concrete mixtures with varying levels of blast furnace slag replacement, highlighting the stimulatory effect of 30% replacement level on hydration reactions, while noting a decrease in compressive strength at 50% and 80% replacement levels. Chemical activation can accelerate hydration and consume portlandite, leading to smaller pores and higher strength, while thermal activation can compact the pore structure and significantly increase compressive strength.
