Replaceable Rotational Viscoelastic Dampers for Improving Structural Damping and Resilience of Steel Frames

Zhan Shu et al.

Summary: A replaceable rotational viscoelastic damper (RRVD) is proposed for steel frame buildings to replace the existing steel beam-column connections. The RRVD, used with a sacrificial fuse segment, aims to protect the structure at large inter-story drifts. The test result confirms that the failure of the new connection is governed by fuse damage. Moreover, the RRVDs improve the system damping and reduce the earthquake-induced roof acceleration and the peak inter-story drift by up to 30%.

Reinforced moment-resisting glulam bolted connection with coupled long steel rod with screwheads for modern timber frame structures

Zhan Shu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an innovative type of moment-resisting glulam beam-to-column connection reinforced by long steel rods with screwheads and long self-tapping screws. Experimental results showed that the proposed connection could provide satisfying moment resistance, energy dissipation, and fast repairability.

Mechanical model and structural control performance of a new rotation-magnified viscoelastic damper

Hong-Nan Li et al.

Summary: This paper presents the development of a new rotation-magnified viscoelastic damper (RMVD) that achieves an improved energy dissipation effect by amplifying angular deformation. The mechanical properties and damping control effect of the RMVD are analyzed through experiments and numerical simulations.

Seismic performance of reinforced concrete frame with lead viscoelastic damper under mainshock-aftershock sequences

Weiyuan Huang et al.

Summary: This study proposes using a novel LVD to improve the seismic performance of weakened RC frames. Experimental investigations show that the LVD has high stiffness, excellent damping capacity, low-frequency sensitivity, and stable hysteretic performance. The analysis results demonstrate that the RC frames with LVD systems outperform the original frames in terms of both mainshock and aftershock seismic performance.

Vibration-Reduction Strategy for High-Rise Braced Frame Using Viscoelastic-Yielding Compounded BRB

Xiangzi Zhou et al.

Summary: This study proposed the concept and technique details of a viscoelastic-yielding compounded BRB (VBRB) that combines a BRB with a viscoelastic damper (VED) for improved vibration reduction. Experimental tests and a parametric design procedure were used to verify the feasibility and performance of the VBRB.
