Summary: Hybrid FCS hollow members, consisting of FRP, steel, and concrete, possess superior mechanical behavior. Limited studies have been conducted on their use as flexural members and the effect of shear connectors. Mechanical behavior of Glass fiber-reinforced polymer-timber-steel tube-concrete composite columns under axial compression

Fubin Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel glass fiber-reinforced polymer-timber-steel tube-concrete composite column and investigates its mechanical behavior through experiments. The size of the timber core has a significant impact on the ductility and energy dissipation capacity of the composite column, while weakening the strength of the confined concrete. The angle and layer numbers of GFRP laminates also affect the stiffness and mechanical performance of the composite column.

Post-fire compressive stress-strain behaviour of steel fibre reinforced recycled aggregate concrete

Tan Wang et al.

Summary: The post-fire compressive stress-strain behavior of steel fiber reinforced recycled aggregate concrete (SFR-RAC) after exposure to elevated temperatures was investigated through uniaxial compressive tests. The test considered parameters such as water-to-cement ratio, recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) substituting ratio, steel fiber content, and heated temperature. The study analyzed the failure mode, strength, elastic modulus, peak strain, and strain-stress response of the specimens. The results showed that the compressive strength and elastic modulus decreased with increased water-to-cement ratio and/or RCA substituting ratio at any exposed temperature. The steel fiber had a positive effect on the residual mechanical properties, which increased with the heated temperature.

Time-dependent behaviour of circular steel tube confined reinforced concrete (STCRC) slender columns

Yun-Long Guo et al.

Summary: Steel tube confined reinforced concrete (STCRC) columns are commonly used in long-span and high-rise structures due to their high load resistance and excellent seismic behavior. This paper presents the first investigation on the long-term behavior of slender STCRC columns. Long-term tests were conducted on axially loaded slender STCRC columns with different slenderness ratios and grades of concrete. The results show that the steel tube can contribute up to 12.6% of the axial stiffness of the composite columns, and its contribution increases over time, particularly in columns with higher slenderness ratios or lower concrete strengths.

Performance of recycled aggregate concrete-filled high-strength steel tubes under axial compression, tension and torsion

Hua-Yang Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper presents the performance of recycled aggregate concrete-filled high-strength steel tubes (RAC-FHST) under axial compression, tension, and torsion. A series of tests were conducted on 50 specimens, varying parameters such as sectional type, steel yield strength, and the replacement ratio of recycled coarse aggregate (RCA). The results show that the use of RCA affects the failure modes, particularly under tension or torsion. Furthermore, the confinement effect of high-strength steel tube improves the performance of RAC-FHST. Simplified models for calculating the ultimate strengths of RAC-FHST under compression, tension, and torsion were proposed based on finite element modeling.

Seismic performance and reparability assessment of recycled aggregate concrete columns with ultra-high-strength steel bars

Jianwei Zhang et al.

Summary: Ultra-high-strength steel bars (UHSS) were innovatively applied in high-strength recycled aggregate concrete (HSRAC) columns to achieve resilient structures cast from green building materials. Quasi-static tests were conducted on five new pattern columns to investigate seismic performance and reparability. The influence of UHSS substitution ratio and recycled coarse aggregate replacement ratio on seismic response and damage evolution of HSRAC columns were discussed. The research showed that configuring UHSS in the HSRAC columns could obtain drift-hardening property, and the residual displacement and crack width meet the requirements of repairable limit at the drift ratio less than 3%. The application of recycled aggregate concrete had negligible effect on the seismic performance and reparability of columns, and even contributed to improving their reparability probability. Moreover, reparability assessment methods were established based on the damage evolution theory and measured results, and prediction models of skeleton curve and reparability probability of HSRAC columns were proposed. The models were then verified by comparing the prediction results with test results.

Seismic performance of elliptical FRP-concrete-steel tubular columns under combined axial load and reversed lateral load

Bing Zhang et al.

Summary: Double-skin tubular columns (DSTCs) with an elliptical section (E-DSTCs) are a novel structural member for harsh environments. Experimental results showed that E-DSTCs had rounded hysteresis loops and remarkable ductility, with the ductility index increasing monotonically with the elliptical aspect ratio. A numerical column model was established to simulate the hysteretic behavior of E-DSTCs and a parametric study was conducted. In practical engineering design, optimizing the elliptical aspect ratio and key parameters, as well as optimizing the FRP tube thickness for different height regions of the column, were recommended.

Confinement behavior and stress-strain response of square concrete columns strengthened with carbon textile reinforced concrete (CTRC) composites

Qin Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the confinement behavior and stress-strain response of concrete columns strengthened with carbon textile reinforced concrete (CTRC) under a uniaxial load were investigated. The experimental results showed that CTRC-confined columns exhibited improved bearing capacity and displacement ductility compared to un-strengthened columns. The number of textile layers, stirrup reinforcement ratio, concrete strength, and short fibers mixed in the strengthening layers all had an impact on the efficiency of the CTRC confining system. Furthermore, a semi-empirical model was proposed to predict the stress-strain response of CTRC confined columns.

Time-dependent modelling of steel-tube confined concrete columns considering confining and bonding effects

Yun-Long Guo et al.

Summary: Steel tube confined reinforced concrete (STCRC) columns have high load-bearing capacity and excellent seismic behavior. The concrete in STCRC columns is subjected to triaxial time-dependent varying stresses even at low sustained loads, and the stresses of the tube and concrete are non-uniformly distributed along the column length due to bonding effects. This study determines a confined concrete creep model for STCRC columns and establishes a refined numerical analysis method considering time-dependent confinement effects and non-uniform stress distribution.

Summary: This paper investigates the corrosion resistance and compression performance of RC columns confined by carbon textile-reinforced concrete (CTRC) under impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) technology in a chloride environment. Experimental results show that the corrosion of reinforcement in the protected specimens is significantly reduced compared to the control columns. The use of ICCP technology improves the bearing capacity and deformation performance of the CTRC-confined RC columns.
