Effect of fillers on the mechanical properties and durability of steel slag concrete

M. H. Lai et al.

Summary: Using steel slag as aggregate and pozzolanic fillers like fly ash or silica fume can enhance the mechanical behavior and durability of concrete. This study conducted experiments to investigate the performance of steel slag concrete and found that it has better workability, improved compressive strength, and reduced chloride ion penetration depth due to its denser microstructure.

Recycling air-cooled blast furnace slag in fiber reinforced alkali-activated mortar

Jinyan Shi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the thermal degradation mechanism of fiber reinforced alkali-activated materials (FR-AAM) and finds that air-cooled blast furnace slag (ACBF) can improve their thermal resistance. Steel fibers better retain mechanical performance, while polypropylene fibers provide channels for the release of vapor pressure after melting.

New perspectives on utilization of CO2 sequestration technologies in cement-based materials

Baoju Liu et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the application of CO2 sequestration technologies in the construction industry and examines the effects of accelerated carbonation on cement-based materials. The results indicate that CO2 curing can improve the microstructure density and mechanical properties of CBM, facilitating the reuse of recycled materials in CBM.

Application of microbially induced carbonate precipitation to form bio-cemented artificial sandstone

Charalampos Konstantinou et al.

Summary: Through microbial induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) technique, artificially cemented specimens can be reliably prepared with properties closely resembling soft carbonate sandstones, avoiding the common cementation destruction issues of conventional sampling techniques. Experimental results show that by keeping MICP parameters constant, different cementation levels can be achieved by varying the injected volume, with fine sand specimens showing a greater strength gain compared to coarse sand specimens.

Mechanistic insights into ureolysis mediated calcite precipitation

Subasree Sridhar et al.

Summary: The study focused on ureolysis mediated calcite precipitation in S. pasteurii, developing a structured model to describe urea uptake, ureolysis, ammonium assimilation and excretion processes. Model parameters were estimated using measured metabolite concentrations, with key findings including growth rate, urease activity, and transport mechanisms for urea and ammonium ions.
