Influence of Process Variables on Shrinkage in Low-Calcium Fly-Ash Geopolymers

Mude Hanumananaik et al.

Summary: This study examines the influence of process variables, such as curing temperature and relative humidity (RH), on the shrinkage of alkali-activated fly ash (AAF). Analysis shows that the strength and pore structure formed in the AAF are dependent on the sodium alumino-silicate (N-A-S-H) gel content, which is sensitive to moisture availability. Reduction in temperature and RH after initial accelerated curing has a beneficial effect on reducing shrinkage compared to drying at a higher temperature. The shrinkage in AAF is significantly lower than a comparable cement paste, and is primarily influenced by the pore structure formed and the N-A-S-H content.

High-Temperature Performance of Low-Calcium Fly Ash-Based Geopolymers

Mude Hanumananaik et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the behavior of alkali-activated fly ash (AAF) geopolymers at high temperatures and finds that the physical and phase changes in the material are influenced by temperature. The results show that AAF with higher water content experiences an increase in strength at temperatures below 200 degrees C, while AAF with lower water content experiences a decrease in strength. Changes in the NASH gel result in consistent strength loss between 200 degrees C and 600 degrees C, while conversion of the gel leads to strength gain between 600 degrees C and 1,000 degrees C.

Investigation on the roles of solution-based alkali and silica in activated low-calcium fly ash and slag blends

K. Chiranjeevi Reddy et al.

Summary: The addition of silica in alkaline activating solution delays the primary hydration of slag while promoting the formation of calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) in activated binder. The reactivity of silica depends on the SiO2/Na2O ratio in the activating solution, with a higher Na content favoring a more reactive form of silica. The incorporation of silica in CASH scales with the silica content in the activating solution, leading to enhanced compressive strength. The form of silica has negligible effect on the dissolution of fly ash in the binder and ultimate strength achieved.

Summary: The study reveals that a decrease in alkali dosage increases the autogenous shrinkage of AASC paste, while increasing Ms enhances autogenous shrinkage within a certain range but decreases it beyond a certain threshold.
