Innovative modeling techniques including MEP, ANN and FQ to forecast the compressive strength of geopolymer concrete modified with nanoparticles

Hemn Unis Ahmed et al.

Summary: The use of nano-materials to improve the engineering properties of GPC has gained popularity. Different machine learning techniques were used to predict the CS of GPC, and the ANN model showed the highest precision. The ratio of alkaline solution to the binder, molarity, NaOH content, curing temperature, and concrete age were identified as key factors affecting the CS of GPC.

Methods to evaluate and quantify the geopolymerization reactivity of waste-derived aluminosilicate precursor in alkali-activated material: A state-of-the-art review

Jiarui Liu et al.

Summary: This paper reviews and compares four mainstream methods for quantifying the geopolymerization reactivity (GR) of aluminosilicate precursors (APs). It suggests the need for a more consistent method to determine the GR of APs. The quantitative X-ray diffraction (QXRD) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) methods show good agreement in characterizing the inherent amorphous phases of APs, while selective dissolution and leaching tests prove to be more indicative. However, further optimization and standardization are necessary for these two methods.

Study on the effect of calcium and sulfur content on the properties of fly ash based geopolymer

Xiao Chen et al.

Summary: The study showed that the mechanical properties of fly ash based geopolymers initially increase and then decrease with the increase of CaO and SO3 content. The addition of CaO and SO3 promoted the geopolymer reaction, increased the gel products and generated ettringite, enhancing the strength of the matrix and compensating the shrinkage of geopolymer.

Effect of fillers on the mechanical properties and durability of steel slag concrete

M. H. Lai et al.

Summary: Using steel slag as aggregate and pozzolanic fillers like fly ash or silica fume can enhance the mechanical behavior and durability of concrete. This study conducted experiments to investigate the performance of steel slag concrete and found that it has better workability, improved compressive strength, and reduced chloride ion penetration depth due to its denser microstructure.

Effect of Si/Al molar ratio on the strength behavior of geopolymer derived from various industrial waste: A current state of the art review

Jiarui Liu et al.

Summary: This paper provides an in-depth review on the correlation between Si/Al molar ratio and properties of various types of AAMs, validating the feasibility of using the molar ratio to formulate AAM and maintain stable performances. It proposes a three-step strategy to effectively convert a broader range of waste materials into normalized AP, serving as a guide for waste valorization and AAM quality control.

The effect of different types of class F fly ashes on the mechanical properties of geopolymers cured at ambient environment

Xiaonan Ge et al.

Summary: This research investigates the effect of the physicochemical characteristics of five cognate fly ashes on the mechanical properties of Class F fly ash-based geopolymers synthesized with the same mix proportion and cured at ambient conditions. The study reveals that the difference in the inherent characteristics of fly ash causes the formation of geopolymers with varied micro-characteristics and hence the discrepancy in the mechanical properties. The compressive strength increases with increasing geopolymers' amorphous phase content and decreasing porosity and Si/Al molar ratio of geopolymer binder. A single and comprehensive reactivity index is proposed to assess the suitability of fly ashes for geopolymers. The approach of producing high-quality geopolymers under ambient conditions will contribute to the development of fly ash utilization and Class F fly ash-based geopolymers' industrialization.

Extensive evaluation on the effect of glass powder on the rheology, strength, and microstructure of metakaolin-based geopolymer binders

Sina Dadsetan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the characteristics of geopolymer pastes derived from metakaolin and glass powder, with focus on rheological, mechanical and microstructural properties. Results showed that addition of glass powder did not affect the rheological behavior of metakaolin-based geopolymers, and up to 25% replacement of glass powder by metakaolin showed similar compressive strengths.
