Effect of particle shape and bedding angle on suffusion in gap-graded granular soils by coupled CFD-DEM method

Chuang Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, the migration of fine particles within a coarse grain matrix under different soil anisotropy conditions was investigated using the coupled CFD-DEM simulations. Macroscopic and microscopic results showed that the greater the bedding angle, the more severe the loss of fines and the more significant the soil deformation. Different migration characteristics were identified based on the degree of soil anisotropy. It was also found that the aspect ratio of particles was beneficial for erosion resistance and soil strength.

Clogging effect of fines in seepage erosion by using CFD-DEM

Hao Xiong et al.

Summary: The macroscopic phenomena and microscopic origin of penetrative migration and retention of fine particles in porous skeleton are studied through simulations using the coupled computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method. The results show that pore size significantly contributes to the degree and position of clogging, flow velocity affects cluster distribution, and more inflow fines aid the development of particle clusters in flow-avoidable areas.

Fan Chen et al.

Summary: The study aims to explore the laws of ground movement and settlement caused by water and sand gushing during tunnel construction, and proposes a theoretical formula for predicting the maximum ground settlement. It was found that surface settlement above the tunnel increases with the increase of mass loss ratio, and the inflow of sand and water exhibits dynamic changes during the water and sand gushing process.

A new Delaunay triangulation-based approach to characterize the pore network in granular materials

Ngoc-Son Nguyen et al.

Summary: The study investigates the pore network characteristics of virtual samples composed of spherical particles simulated by DEM, proposing a new merging criterion and comparing it with two commonly used criteria in the literature. The new criterion significantly reduces the inherent subjectivity in characterizing the granular pore network and addresses the drawbacks of the two existing criteria. Furthermore, the constriction size distributions obtained using different criteria tend to converge for gap-graded and widely graded materials.

Dynamic Stability Analysis of Pile Foundation under Wave Load

Xu Xu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the dynamic stability of pile foundations under wave loads, using a double-parameter model to calculate foundation reaction force and considering pile side soil softening under cyclic loads. By establishing the energy equation of the entire pile and using the Hamiltonian principle, it obtains dynamic differential equations of the pile in different loading situations, and verifies the analytical solution's practicality and safety by comparing it with finite-element software simulation results. The research indicates that the amplitudes of the pile body increase linearly with an increase in wave height, and the critical frequency calculated by the double-parameter method is lower but more practical and safe than that calculated by the Winkler model.
