Green extraction of bioactive compounds from apple pomace by ultrasound assisted natural deep eutectic solvent extraction: Optimisation, comparison and bioactivity

Rubiya Rashid et al.

Summary: This study evaluated natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) coupled with ultrasound assisted extraction (UAE) as extraction techniques for bioactive compounds from apple pomace. Seven different NADES were explored as green extraction solvents, and DES1, DES2, and DES5 showed better extraction efficiency than conventional solvents. The optimized processing parameters for UAE-DES were sonication time of 40 min, water content of 30%, solid/liquid ratio of 1:30, temperature of 40°C, acoustic intensity of 83.2 W/cm2, and duty cycle of 75%. The main polyphenol compound in the optimized extract was quercetin, followed by chlorogenic acid, gallic acid, phloretin, phloridizin, and rutin.

Biomass valorization by integrating ultrasonication and deep eutectic solvents: Delignification, cellulose digestibility and solvent reuse

Kiat Moon Lee et al.

Summary: Researchers have shown interest in the valorization of biomass for biofuels production, particularly oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB). By using a combination of deep eutectic solvent (DES) and ultrasonication, the pretreatment of OPEFB resulted in improved cellulose digestibility, reduced lignin content, and biomass crystallinity. The ultrasound-assisted DES pretreatment exhibited better performance compared to other methods and showed the potential for effective biomass conversion to sugars.

Study on extraction and antioxidant activity of polysaccharides from Radix Bupleuri by natural deep eutectic solvents combined with ultrasound-assisted enzymolysis

Ning Wang et al.

Summary: A green and efficient extraction method for Radix Bupleuri polysaccharide (RBP) using natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) combined with ultrasonic-assisted enzymolytic extraction (UAEE) was established. The best technical conditions for NADES combined with UAEE were determined, and the reuse of NADES was shown to have little effect on the extraction rate of RBP. The extracted polysaccharides demonstrated in vitro antioxidant activity, providing a theoretical basis for further understanding of the physical and chemical properties of RBP and the development of its biological activities.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of NADES composition and extraction conditions on the simultaneous extraction of antioxidants from Fucus vesiculosus, showing that NADES extracts have the potential to scavenge free radicals, with phlorotannins significantly influencing the scavenging activity. The addition of water and prolongation of sonication time during extraction were found to enhance the synergistic effect of antioxidants extracted by NADES.
