Revisiting the Oxidation of Flavonoids: Loss, Conservation or Enhancement of Their Antioxidant Properties

Herna Speisky et al.

Summary: Flavonoids have the ability to act as antioxidants, but their phenolic moieties are easily oxidized, compromising their antioxidant capacity. However, the oxidation of certain flavonoids can actually enhance their antioxidant properties. This apparent paradox is due to the pro-oxidant and/or electrophilic character of the oxidation-derived metabolites, which activate the cell's endogenous antioxidant capacity or prevent the activation of pro-oxidant pathways.

Chemical, Antioxidant, and Antimicrobial Properties of the Peel and Male Flower By-Products of Four Varieties of Punica granatum L. Cultivated in the Marche Region for Their Use in Cosmetic Products

Maria Rosa Gigliobianco et al.

Summary: The study explores the potential use of agri-food waste from pomegranates in the cosmetics industry. The peel and male flower extracts of different pomegranate varieties were analyzed for their phenol compounds, antioxidant capacity, antimicrobial activity, and cell viability. The results showed that the peel extracts had higher phenol content and antimicrobial activity, while the male flower extracts had higher antioxidant capacity. These findings are important for the development of sustainable and natural ingredients in cosmetics.

Maturation Process, Nutritional Profile, Bioactivities and Utilisation in Food Products of Red Pitaya Fruits: A Review

Yanyi Huang et al.

Summary: Red pitaya, also known as dragon fruit, is a well-known species of pitaya fruit with different nutritional components in its seeds, peel, and pulp. As the fruit matures, the concentrations of beta-cyanins, phenolics, and flavonoids gradually increase, with pigmentation appearing in the pulp earlier than the peel.

Photoprotective action, antioxidant activity, and toxicity of aqueous extracts of Campomanesia sessiliflora O. Berg

Thiago Luis Aguayo-de-Castro et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the antioxidant activity, sun protection factor (SPF), and toxicity of Campomanesia sessiliflora leaf extracts. Infusion method showed higher levels of phenolic compounds and flavonoids, while both infusion and maceration had the same tannin content; LD50 was considered low toxicity for both extracts. Infusion had a higher SPF of 9.98, while maceration had better contents of secondary metabolites and antioxidant activity.
