Emergency thoracotomies in traumatic cardiac arrests following blunt trauma - experiences from a German level I trauma center

Marcel Niemann et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the RT approaches, intraoperative findings, and clinical outcome measures following RT in patients with cardiac arrest following blunt trauma. The results showed that the survival rate following RT in severe trauma patients was low, and complex surgical interventions were required.

Emergency Resuscitative Thoracotomy for Civilian Thoracic Trauma in the Field and Emergency Department Settings: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Amy Liu et al.

Summary: Emergency department resuscitative thoracotomy (ED-RT) and prehospital resuscitative thoracotomy (PH-RT) are potentially life-saving procedures for patients with penetrating thoracic injuries in extremis and with signs of life. The efficacy of this procedure is time sensitive, and there appears to be a greater mortality risk for patients receiving PH-RT compared to ED-RT. More studies are needed to determine the significance of PH-RT mortality.

Outcomes of the resuscitative and emergency thoracotomy at a Dutch level-one trauma center: are there predictive factors for survival?

A. S. Y. Sam et al.

Summary: This study investigated the 30-day survival rate of resuscitative and emergency thoracotomies in trauma patients and found that factors associated with survival were related to the trauma mechanism, the indication for thoracotomy, and the response to resuscitation prior to thoracotomy.

Emergency Department Resuscitative Thoracotomy: Indications, surgical procedure and outcome. A narrative review

Paolo Aseni et al.

Summary: EDRT is an emergency surgical procedure used for resuscitation of select dying trauma patients, with only 7.8% of patients surviving. Penetrating trauma and witnessed cardiopulmonary arrest with the presence of vital signs at the trauma center are the most favorable conditions for performing EDRT.
