Acid-base abnormalities and liver dysfunction

Periklis Katopodis et al.

Summary: In addition to the kidneys and lungs, the liver also plays a crucial role in regulating Acid-Base Equilibrium (ABE). Patients with liver cirrhosis may experience various acid-base imbalances, including Respiratory Alkalosis (RAlk) and other pathophysiological mechanisms such as metabolic alkalosis, hyponatremic metabolic acidosis, hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis, lactic acidosis, and metabolic alkalosis due to urea metabolism. Traditional ABE reading models fail to identify and assess these underlying disorders, leading to the development of new physicochemical mathematical models.

CYP1A2 mRNA Expression Rather than Genetic Variants Indicate Hepatic CYP1A2 Activity

Ferenc Fekete et al.

Summary: The impact of CYP1A2 genetic variants on enzyme activity is inconsistent. CYP1A2-genotyping is not suitable for predicting CYP1A2 function, but CYP1A2 mRNA expression in leukocytes can provide information about patients' CYP1A2-metabolizing capacity.

Tobacco Smoke and CYP1A2 Activity in a US Population with Normal Liver Enzyme Levels

Alexis Garduno et al.

Summary: The study found that liver enzyme tests can reflect CYP1A2 activity, and this reflection is influenced by smoking status. The association between smoking and CYP1A2 activity depends not only on smoking intensity but also on the duration of tobacco exposure.

Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and the Kidney: A Review

Ilaria Umbro et al.

Summary: NAFLD is associated with extrahepatic manifestations like cardiovascular disease and sleep apnea, as well as an increased risk of incident CKD. Inflammation and oxidative stress play key roles in linking NAFLD to CKD. Studies show that CKD develops more frequently in NAFLD patients, persisting even after adjusting for risk factors and severity of NAFLD, emphasizing the need for multidisciplinary surveillance and early treatment for these patients.

Molecular and cellular mechanisms of liver fibrosis and its regression

Tatiana Kisseleva et al.

Summary: Chronic liver injury results in liver inflammation and fibrosis, which can be reversed by eliminating activated myofibroblasts and resorbing the fibrous scar. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying liver fibrosis and its reversibility can lead to the identification of new therapeutic targets for liver fibrosis treatment.
