Measuring Shear Wave Velocity in Adult Skeletal Muscle with Ultrasound 2-D Shear Wave Elastography: A Scoping Review

Mikaela L. Stiver et al.

Summary: Ultrasound 2-D shear wave elastography (US 2D-SWE) is a non-invasive and cost-effective tool used to quantify tissue stiffness. This scoping review examined the use of US 2D-SWE in measuring shear wave velocity (SWV) in skeletal muscle and identified the lack of consensus and methodological differences in current literature. The review emphasizes the need for standardized scanning protocols and further research to address the inconsistencies and gaps in the literature.

Stiffness of Muscles and Tendons of the Lower Limb of Professional and Semiprofessional Athletes Using Shear Wave Elastography

Claudia Romer et al.

Summary: Objective Shear wave elastography (SWE) was used to assess the stiffness of muscles and tendons in the lower limb of professional (PG) and semiprofessional female athletes (SG). The results showed that professional female athletes had higher stiffness values in muscles and tendons of the lower limb compared to semiprofessional female athletes, except for the patellar tendon. Understanding these differences is important for diagnosing tendon pathology and injuries. Musculoskeletal SWE can provide significant benefits in sports medicine, rehabilitation, and preventive medicine.

Muscle and Tendon Stiffness of the Lower Limb of Professional Adolescent Soccer Athletes Measured Using Shear Wave Elastography

Claudia Roemer et al.

Summary: This study used shear wave elastography (SWE) to examine the differences in stiffness of quadriceps tendon and muscle between adolescent and adult professional soccer players, and identified lateral imbalances. SWE may be a valuable diagnostic tool to detect early injury risk factors and contribute to the prevention of acute and chronic injury in adolescent athletes.

Importance of shear-wave elastography in prediction of Achilles tendon rupture

Gordana Ivanac et al.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the risk of contralateral tendon rupture in patients who underwent surgical reconstruction of a ruptured Achilles tendon, finding that the elasticity of injured tendons decreased significantly. The contralateral tendons in these patients were shown to have lower stiffness compared to healthy individuals, making them more prone to future ruptures.

Shear Wave and Strain Elastography in Crohn's Disease-A Systematic Review

Anna Grazynska et al.

Summary: A systematic review was conducted on the use of sonoelastography in the diagnosis and assessment of Crohn's disease, revealing a small number of studies and significant methodological differences, emphasizing the need for further research to prove its feasibility. Standardized assessment criteria and cut-off points for strain elastography (SE) and shear wave elastography (SWE) should be established in the future.
