Hydroperoxyl radical (HOO•) as a reducing agent: unexpected synergy with antioxidants. A review

Andrea Baschieri et al.

Summary: This review discusses the recent progress in understanding the chemistry of the hydroperoxyl radical (HOO·) and its interaction with antioxidants during lipid peroxidation. Unlike other radicals, HOO· has both oxidizing and reducing activity, which allows it to enhance the effectiveness of antioxidants. The presence of HOO· along with other radicals also triggers the catalytic antioxidant activity of certain compounds.

Aqueous TiO2 Nanoparticles React by Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer

Jennifer L. Peper et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between the redox reactions of aqueous colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles and pH. The results show that the reduction potentials of the nanoparticles are linearly correlated to the pH values, with a coefficient of -60 +/- 5 mV/pH. Additionally, it is found that both capped and uncapped nanoparticles exhibit similar reduction potentials at low pH. Furthermore, proton-coupled electron transfer is suggested to be the preferred mode of redox reactions.

Synergic antioxidant activity of γ-terpinene with phenols and polyphenols enabled by hydroperoxyl radicals

Yafang Guo et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that gamma-terpinene can interact with mono- and polyphenolic antioxidants, synergistically regenerating chain-breaking antioxidants and exhibiting antioxidant activity. The different synergy mechanisms of gamma-terpinene with different types of antioxidants are discussed, highlighting its relevance in lipid oxidation and calling for further research in heterogeneous food products.

Proton-Coupled Defects Impact O-H Bond Dissociation Free Energies on Metal Oxide Surfaces

Robert E. Warburton et al.

Summary: The study elucidates the impact of proton-coupled defects on the bond dissociation free energies of O-H bonds on anatase TiO2 surfaces using hybrid functional periodic density functional theory. The differences in these energy values are primarily determined by differences in electron transfer driving forces, which are analyzed within a Marcus theory framework. These fundamental insights have broad implications for electrocatalysis at semiconductor surfaces.

Nanoparticle O-H Bond Dissociation Free Energies from Equilibrium Measurements of Cerium Oxide Colloids

Rishi G. Agarwal et al.

Summary: A novel equilibrium strategy is presented for measuring the hydrogen atom affinity of colloidal metal oxide nanoparticles, focusing on redox changes and H loadings of nanoceria. The measured CeO-H BDFEs span a range of 13 kcal mol(-1) and are related to the average redox state of the nanoceria colloid. The tunability of ceria BDFEs may explain its effectiveness in catalysis.

Hydrogen Atom Transfer from HOO. to ortho-Quinones Explains the Antioxidant Activity of Polydopamine

Yafang Guo et al.

Summary: Research demonstrates that polydopamine exhibits excellent antioxidant activity by trapping alkylperoxyl radicals through reducing ortho-quinone moieties. This reaction occurs via a hydrogen atom transfer mechanism, as evidenced by the kinetic solvent effect observed in model quinone reactions with hydroperoxyl radicals. This discovery aids in understanding the redox-mediated bioactivity of melanins and quinones.

Methods to Determine Chain-Breaking Antioxidant Activity of Nanomaterials beyond DPPH•. A Review

Andrea Baschieri et al.

Summary: This review highlights the recent progress in understanding the mechanism of action of nanomaterials with antioxidant activity and in evaluating their activity using chemical methods. Nanomaterials play a significant role in improving antioxidant research, but there is a need for better characterization of the property of "antioxidant activity" and avoiding oversimplified chemical methods.

Autoxidation vs. antioxidants - the fight for forever

Julian Helberg et al.

Summary: Autoxidation limits the longevity of hydrocarbons and materials by leading to complex mixtures of compounds that alter their physical properties. Antioxidants can inhibit this process by intervening directly in the chain reaction. Understanding the mechanistic considerations of autoxidation is important across various contexts.
